Specialist Nurse - Acute Kidney Injury Team
Band 7, NHS AfC; permanent, full time, 37.5 hours per week. Site: Whiston Hospital, Prescot. Salary £49,387 - £56,515 per annum. Closing 31/07/2026.
Job overview
The post holder will liaise with medical, nursing, imaging and pharmacy staff to ensure delivery of clinical measures for AKI patients. Duties include supporting awareness, sharing specialist knowledge, delivering education sessions and ensuring clinical pathway compliance.
Main duties of the job
- Work autonomously, managing a caseload of AKI patients within the specialty and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
- Implement key measures (AQ) to improve outcomes: urine dipstick within 24 hours of AKI alert, pharmacist review of medication, cessation of ACE inhibitors/ARBs, serum creatinine test within 24 hours, ultrasound within 24 hours, specialist discussion within 12 hours and provision of a patient information leaflet.
- Ensure completion of CQUIN information in discharge summaries: stage of AKI, evidence of medicines review, required blood tests and their frequency.
Working hours
7‑day service: Mon‑Fri 08:00‑20:00; Sat‑Sun 09:00‑17:00.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Specialty related course or ENB.
- Degree/masters level qualification, or willingness to work toward one.
Knowledge and Experience
- Substantial post‑registration experience.
- Experience working with patients with AKI/CKD.
- Knowledge of national agenda, NICE guidance, CQC, NHSLA and best practice.
- Knowledge of current clinical research and professional issues.
- Nephrology or critical care experience.
- Experience in root cause analysis and developing clinical pathways or protocols.
