The role of Matron for the Medical wards at Whiston Hospital provides day-to-day visible, accessible, and authoritative leadership in clinical areas. The Matron works as Matron of the day until 8pm, and covers weekends/9-day fortnight. The post holder must be patient‑focused, possess excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to work under competing pressures and priorities that frequently change. The Matron will work closely with nursing and medical teams, create an environment of continuous quality improvement, and ensure high standards of patient care. The role requires understanding of Trust objectives and core values to support the senior nursing team and ensure compliance.

Detailed job description:

  • Lead and coordinate risk assessments.
  • Investigate and resolve formal clinical complaints; implement action plans and monitor continuous improvement.
  • Ensure prevention of hospital‑acquired infection/transmission in partnership with the IPC Team.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain Professional Registration and adhere to relevant code of practice.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (Level 1)
  • Mentorship in Clinical Practice equivalent to Level 6
  • Recognised leadership qualification (minimum ILM Level 5 or equivalent), or working towards or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of commitment to continuous learning and application in practice
  • First Degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience in a relevant environment
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or working towards it
