Endoscopy Staff Nurse (Band 5) – active NMC registration required. You will work in the Endoscopy Unit and Endoscopy Treatment unit on a rotational basis between St Helens and Whiston Hospitals. 7‑day working week with shift patterns of 8‑4, 8:30‑16:30, 10‑6 and 12:30‑20:30, subject to change.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate effectively in formulation and implementation of client individualised care.
  • Participate in research, outreach, and clinical audits directed by Unit Manager.
  • Promote concise and effective communication with service users, ward nurses and staff.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained safe and functional.
  • Contribute efficiently to patient care and monitoring system in the Endoscopy Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications and relationship skills

  • Provide and receive complex information, communicating sensitively and confidentially regarding patients/clients.
  • Communicate in a compassionate and empathetic manner, using persuasion and reassurance.
  • Recognise barriers to communication and modify style as required.
  • Communicate while providing training to students and across the MDT.

Clinical Skills

  • Plan and organise a defined caseload of patients on a continuing basis.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care; recognise signs of deterioration and respond per protocol.
  • Maintain training for clinical skills within scope of practice.
  • Maintain safe custody of drugs, ensuring statutory and trust requirements are met.
  • Respond to complaints/concerns and escalating when required.
  • Manage clinical incidents/near misses and report promptly.
  • Act as patient advocate within multidisciplinary team decision‑making.
  • Work within organisational policy, SOPs and guidelines.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement risk‑reducing measures.
  • Maintain privacy, dignity and safety of patients.

  • Participate in effective use of ward/departmental resources and equipment, including stock management.
  • Handle patient valuables safely.
  • Sign off agency timesheets.
  • Liaise with Roster Coordinator for balanced roster.
  • Order and receive goods in accordance with financial framework.

  • Deputise in absence of Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Manage own and others’ time through delegation.
  • Act as assessor/supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Set yearly personal and professional objectives.
  • Support appraisal process for junior staff.
  • Be flexible in safe staffing delivery and redeployment within scope.

Research and Audit

  • Contribute to data collection for research and audit.
  • Identify relevant audit topics.
  • Evaluate research critically before applying to practice.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • 1st level Registered Nurse (degree/diploma).
  • Current NMC Registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience

  • Knowledge of NMC professional standards with code of practice.
  • Experience working in a clinical environment.
  • Understanding of NMC Revalidation requirements.
  • Experience within multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of NHS issues at national, regional, local levels.
  • Experience providing and receiving complex, sensitive information.
