Job Overview

Clinical Coding Specialist – Clinical Coder (ACC) – Band 5 – NHS AfC – Permanent – Fully remote or on site – 37.5 hrs/week – Site: Whiston Hospital Town, Prescot.

We are looking to recruit highly motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Clinical Coders to join our Trust to support the department in achieving mandated reporting and financial requirements, whilst also having the opportunity to progress professionally.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Work closely with the Clinical Coding Delivery Team Manager to support the delivery and ongoing improvement of clinical documentation and accurate coded data.
  • Advise on data recording practices to ensure coding accurately reflects inpatient care and support improvement initiatives.
  • Undertake clinical coding validation, training and data quality reviews with the Clinical Coding Trainer and Auditor.
  • Act as a support to the Manager to facilitate contact with designated divisions or specialties and communicate complex coding issues.
  • Analyse and abstract diagnostic and procedural information from patient records across all specialties.
  • Translate diagnostic and procedural information using ICD‑10 and OPCS4 and enter coding into the Trust’s PAS in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Mentor and assist in the education of less experienced clinical coders and maintain accuracy and completeness of coding to national requirements.
  • Work with clinicians on a regular basis to validate clinically coded data.
  • Plan own workload, prioritise tasks and meet team and individual targets.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings, audit reviews, and improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Approved Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical coding experience across a range of specialties.
  • Experience with ICD‑10, OPCS4 and the National Tariff Payment System.
  • Knowledge of the HRG Grouper and clinical coding audit processes.
  • Strong knowledge of data protection legislation, Caldicott and related guidance.
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office and coding software.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Proactive, self‑reliant with strong organisational and time‑management skills.

Additional Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working with clinicians and senior staff.
  • Experience of undertaking presentations relating to clinical coding.
  • Knowledge of SNOMED CT.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
