Job overview:
- Ensure continuity of Haematology diagnostics services across four MWL pathology sites.
- Timely, accurate and safe delivery of tests.
- Optimises KPIs and equipment utilisation in line with service delivery.
- Drives innovation.
- Oversees regulatory and Quality Assurance standards compliance (e.g. HSE, UKAS, NEQAS).
- Leading staff management and workforce stability.
- Coordinates training and development.
- Leads on incident investigations and near misses and ensures learning to reduce clinical risk.
Main duties of the job:
- Provide specialist expertise in Haematology and be the lead scientist in the area.
- Resolve day-to-day management issues in Haematology Blood Sciences for all aspects of the patient pathway.
- Utilise effective change management, people management and project management skills to implement projects within the department.
- Oversee performance management systems to ensure services meet agreed service specification including key performance indicators and other local and national targets.
- Ensure business continuity plans are in place.
- Work closely with the lead clinician for Haematology and the service lead to develop the service and manage risk.
- Ensure effective systems for the management, recording and reporting of risks, complaints, patient safety, clinical audit, clinical effectiveness and COSHH.
- Ensure incident reporting and complaints management procedures are followed, used as a learning opportunity and that appropriate actions are taken to inform changes to service delivery and reduce the risk of recurrence.
- Work with other managers and colleagues to identify, manage and minimise risks within the Trust’s Risk Management Framework.
- Lead in recruitment and selection of staff.
- Responsible for initial stages of disciplinary procedures, personal development, management of sickness absence and allocation of responsibilities of staff.
Qualifications:
- Fellowship (FIBMS) / Master’s Degree or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences.
- Registration with Health and Care Professions Council.
- Membership of the IBMS.
- Management qualification or required to work towards.
Experience:
- 3 years' experience as a Senior Biomedical Scientist or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems.
- Standard IT packages e.g. word processing and spreadsheets.
- Problem solving.
- Performance management.
- Exhibit competency to work alone out of core hours.
Skills:
- Evidence of CPD.
- Ability to work within all specialist areas of the department.
- Possess highly developed technical skills.
- Full knowledge of theoretical and practical laboratory procedures.
- Lead on quality control procedures.
- Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must be able to organise departmental workloads and that of subordinate staff.
- Experience of presentations.
