This post is for a consultant in Acute Medicine. It is a whole‑time position offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. The post will enable the AMU to continue to enhance its early management of emergency medical admissions by strengthening arrangements for the assessment and early management of medical emergencies across the Emergency Department (ED) and AMU, managing medical patients in the early part of their hospital stay including via large embedded Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area and an Enhanced Care area. They will also make a vital contribution to teaching and training in acute medicine. The post holder will also contribute to the out of hours General Internal Medicine Physician of the Day (PoD) rota with a 3% on call supplement.

Applicants must hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent), be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or obtain their CCT within six months of interview. AAC date will be Monday 22nd June 2026.

Main duties of the job

  • STHK AMU 5.0 PA AMU DCC fixed sessions – as per indicative planner below
  • 0.5 PA AMU Annualised Session – 1 ‘flexible cover’ session (Alt week = 20 per year)
  • 0.5 PA AMU Weekend cover 1:8 (remuneration also include TOIL; discuss at job plan meeting)
  • 1.5 PA AMU DCC Admin
  • 2.5 PA SPA
  • 3% On call Supplement

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non‑UK trained will be required to provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT on successful application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider Status (as applicable)
  • Specialty Certificate Examination in Acute Medicine
  • An appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD/PHD) or equivalent medical qualification

Knowledge & Experience

  • Demonstrate excellent communication with patients and colleagues
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Acute Medicine curriculum and applying to this post
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit and/or research within team structure
  • Ability to teach clinical and generic skills and have experience teaching undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Evidence of relevant research e.g. presentations, publications in peer reviewed journals
