Job Overview
The role involves day‑to‑day management of clinical coding staff across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder ensures all coding is completed accurately and on time for SUS deadlines, supports Payment by Results, and maintains an optimal coding service for the Trust.
Main Duties
- Manage the operational delivery section of the clinical coding team, maintaining departmental effectiveness and high standards.
- Oversee day‑to‑day processes for the coding service, including management of Teams channels and rotas.
- Handle all clinical coding queries and liaise with clinicians and other trust staff to review coding issues.
- Plan workload for oneself and the team, ensuring team objectives are achieved.
- Stay updated on current coding issues and developments within the department.
- Create an environment that promotes learning and skill development.
- Ensure coding completes accurately and timely, meeting national and contractual mandates, and provide regular progress updates to the Clinical Coding Manager.
Qualifications
- Excellent standard of education.
- Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).
- Degree level education or equivalent experience.
- Managerial qualification or equivalent experience.
- Completed the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher course within the last 12 months.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated coding accuracy levels exceeding Data Security and Protection Toolkit standards.
- Knowledge of national benchmarking systems such as HED, SHMI, HSMR.
- Experience working with clinicians and senior staff.
- Experience delivering presentations on clinical coding.
- Proficient in office software and EPR systems.
- Strong understanding of clinical coding rules, conventions, and NHS classifications.
- Ability to apply data protection legislation, Caldicott principles, and related guidance.
- Excellent medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology knowledge.
- Independent decision‑making ability and effective prioritisation of workload.
- Teamwork, good interpersonal skills, and resilience under pressure.
- Knowledge of Payment by Results.
- Organisational and monitoring of workload and performance targets.
