Merrifield Consultants are delighted to be partnering with the Artists' General Benevolent Institution (AGBI), an artist-led charity supporting professional fine artists in need, to recruit a Communication and Engagement Manager (Maternity Cover).
Summary of the role
A pivotal role responsible for raising the profile of the AGBI, strengthening supporter and artist engagement and delivering a varied programme of events. You will lead on marketing, communications, outreach and stakeholder engagement, supported by an assistant and an active Events Committee. This is an opportunity to join a historic charity making a tangible difference to artists across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Details of the role
- Contract: Temporary maternity cover (minimum 6 months, with potential to extend to 12 months)
- Salary: £50,000 FTE
- Working pattern: 3 days per week, office-based (Tuesday-Thursday)
- Location: Pimlico
The Communication and Engagement Manager will oversee all marketing, communications, and engagement activity, ensuring the AGBI's messaging is consistent, compelling, and aligned with its mission. You will manage digital channels, produce engaging content, and build strong relationships with professional fine artists, donors, galleries, and networks. You will also lead on the planning and delivery of events, including artist talks, fundraising workshops, and the annual Stewards Exhibition.
Responsibilities
- Marketing & Communications: Manage all communications activity, ensuring clear, accurate and engaging messaging across digital channels, newsletters and the website.
- Digital presence: Grow the AGBI's online reach among professional fine artists and donors.
- Content creation: Produce compelling content that showcases the AGBI's history, impact and ongoing work.
- Event management: Plan and deliver events with support from the Events Committee, ensuring high-quality experiences that reflect the charity's values.
- Stakeholder engagement: Build and maintain relationships with artists, galleries, studios and professional networks.
- Programme oversight: Oversee the Stewards' Programme to increase visibility and engagement across the artist community.
- Diversity & inclusion: Support the charity's commitment to broadening participation and representation.

- Communications expertise with experience managing digital channels and producing high-quality content.
- Event management experience with the ability to deliver engaging, well-organised events.
- Relationship-building skills and confidence engaging with artists, donors, and external partners.
