About the Opportunity

Merrick and Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the mechanical design of projects and support Commissioning and Validation processes as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with a moderate volume of travel (up to 50%) for team, project, client and market engagement.

This position requires a competent mechanical engineer/designer who, as a member of the mechanical design team, will be responsible for all phases of mechanical design production for a variety of Life Sciences, Nuclear, and National Security projects ranging from programming through construction administration. Opportunities also exist for participation in facility commissioning projects.

What You’ll Do

  • Participate as part of the mechanical design team and the multi-disciplinary project team, execute the detailed mechanical, plumbing/process and controls design of complex mechanical facilities including life-science and nuclear facilities, inclusive of:
  • Detailed engineering calculations
  • Production of detailed 3D models and construction drawings
  • Specifications
  • Reports as required
  • Support commissioning and validation exercises

Perform site inspection, testing, and commissioning of equipment and facilities as required, which may include travel within the UK and abroad. Utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with clients and other employees. Develop and maintain expert level knowledge of applicable codes and standards for the design and construction of nuclear and biocontainment facilities in the UK and internationally as required. Develop and maintain expert level skills in required software packages including REVIT, Excel, Word, etc. Execute all work in accordance with Merrick and project specific Quality Assurance procedures. Exercise excellent independent judgement and initiative to complete design tasks. Work independently and in a team environment based upon Merrick's hybrid arrangement comprised of office (future), remote, and onsite work.

Required Qualifications

  • Mechanical engineer/designer with experience in mechanical building design for government, academic, and private clients.
  • Demonstrated experience in as many of the following areas as possible is an asset: HVAC, plumbing/process, fire protection and controls design.
  • Experience in containment laboratories and/or Biopharma is recommended.
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience; preferred eight (8) years related experience.
  • Licensure as a Chartered Engineer in the UK is preferred. If the candidate is not currently licensed, they must demonstrate a plan and ability, including holding an engineering degree from an accredited university to obtain licensure within two years of joining Merrick.
  • Experience in aspects of mechanical building design including planning, calculations, equipment selection, schematic design, production of construction documents (drawings and specifications), and construction administration is a strong asset.
  • Laboratory design and construction knowledge is an advantage.
  • Experience in energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis for sustainability design is an asset.
  • Candidate shall be proficient in the use of REVIT and AutoCAD.
  • Candidate shall be proficient in report writing including basis of design reports, specifications, field reports, etc.
  • Candidate shall have good verbal and writing skills and be able to interact effectively with clients and other employees and must have strong oral presentation skills.
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate effective problem solving skills applying mechanical design principles.
  • Candidate must be able to travel and must possess a current passport. It is anticipated that this may include some international travel.
  • Client projects for this position require UK Citizenship.
  • Candidate must possess or be able to obtain SC level security clearance.
