The Microsoft 365 Senior Engineer is responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimising the organisation's Microsoft 365 environment to ensure a seamless and productive digital experience for all employees. This role will lead initiatives for, and oversee the management of, the full M365 ecosystem (including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Office365 and the Power Platform) ensuring that services are secure, reliable, and aligned with best-practice governance.
Administration & Maintenance- Oversee the administration, maintenance, and monitoring of the full Microsoft 365 environment, ensuring services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Office365 and Power Platform are reliable, secure, and optimised.
- Maintain M365 licensing, roles, and permissions to ensure accurate allocation and alignment with business needs.
- Ensure platform changes, feature releases, and lifecycle updates are understood, tested, and successfully implemented with minimal user impact.
- Define and enforce appropriate guardrails and standards for the use of the Power Platform within the business.
- Define and maintain documentation, standard procedures, and configuration baselines to ensure consistency and operational maturity.
- Implement and manage security controls across Microsoft 365, including compliance and retention policies set by the Security and Data Governance teams.
- Manage compliance policies, retention schedules, eDiscovery processes, and regulatory requirements to maintain a robust governance posture.
- Ensure Power Platform environments follow approved governance frameworks, including data policies, connectors, security roles, and audit controls.
- Design and enhance M365 solutions, ensuring they are secure, scalable, and aligned to organisational strategy.
- Translate business and security requirements into technical designs and implementation plans, defining methods and procedures for new assignments where no precedent exists.
- Lead M365 design workstreams within cross-functional projects, providing expert guidance to engineers, security specialists, and architects.
- Develop and lead a Power Platform Centre of Excellence to drive standardisation, innovation, and best practices.
- Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex incidents.
- Collaborate with Service Desk and wider Technology teams to improve support processes, reducing repeat incidents and improving resolution times.
- Define processes and technical documentation standards to support operational continuity.
- Provide support, deliver training, best practices, and tools to empower citizen developers.
- Influence the effective adoption of Microsoft 365 tools by identifying opportunities to enhance productivity and simplify workflows.
- Partner with business units to identify automation opportunities and deliver value-driven solutions.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across M365 operations, leveraging automation, standardisation, and data-driven insights.
- Demonstrable experience managing and maintaining large-scale Microsoft 365 environments.
- 5+ years in M365 engineering roles, with hands-on experience.
- Strong understanding of Power Platform administration (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI etc), including governance, environment management, and security controls.
- Experience defining and maintaining M365 security and compliance controls such as DLP, retention policies, eDiscovery, Microsoft Defender, and Purview.
- Proficiency in scripting for automation, reporting and configuration tasks.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams.
- Familiarity with ITIL service management practices, incident management, change control, and structured support processes.
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert (or equivalent experience).
- Microsoft certifications in Power Platform or related technologies (preferred).
- ITIL Foundation certification (desirable).
