MERJE is partnering with an established financial services business operating within the online trading and investment sector to recruit a Compliance Monitoring Officer.
This role offers an opportunity for a compliance professional with monitoring or assurance experience to take greater ownership of reviews within an established second-line function. You will assess regulatory compliance and control effectiveness, identify areas for improvement and work with stakeholders to support effective remediation.
The role
You will deliver assigned reviews within the compliance monitoring plan, managing activity from scoping and testing through to drafting reports and following up agreed actions. Working under the oversight of the Compliance Monitoring Manager, you will exercise independent judgement and provide constructive challenge to the business.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver assigned thematic and targeted monitoring reviews in line with the agreed plan and methodology.
- Develop review scopes, testing plans and sampling approaches, with appropriate management oversight.
- Assess the design and operating effectiveness of controls through walkthroughs, document reviews, data analysis and sample testing.
- Undertake reviews across areas such as client onboarding and appropriateness, client categorisation, financial promotions, product governance, Consumer Duty, complaints handling and conflicts of interest.
- Contribute to reviews of best execution, market conduct and client asset controls where included within the agreed remit.
- Draft concise reports setting out findings, proposed risk ratings and practical recommendations.
- Discuss findings with business stakeholders and help agree appropriate actions and completion dates.
- Track remediation, undertake validation testing and escalte overdue actions or unresolved concerns.
Experience and skills
- Relevant experience in compliance monitoring, assurance or internal audit within regulated financial services.
- Experience undertaking compliance reviews or substantial elements of reviews, including testing and documenting findings.
- A working knowledge of FCA requirements relevant to investment services, including conduct risk and Consumer Duty.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Confidence discussing findings with stakeholders and providing proportionate, constructive challenge.
- The ability to work independently within an agreed framework and recognise when escalation is required.
- Strong organisation skills and the ability to manage multiple review activities.
- Experience within online trading, investment platforms, stockbroking or derivatives.
- Familiarity with execution-only services and the risks associated with retail investment products.
- Experience reviewing remediation and assessing whether actions effectively address identified weaknesses.
The individual
You will be analytical, pragmatic and comfortable taking responsibility for your work. You will combine attention to detail with sound judgement, communicate findings clearly and build effective relationships while maintaining the independence expected of a second-line compliance role.
