An established engineering organisation operating in the defence and aerospace space is looking for an experienced Java Software Engineer to support the continued development of next-generation air defence systems. This is a hands-on contract role, focused on designing and developing robust, safety-critical software within a high-assurance engineering environment. You'll be working on evolving software tools and architectures that directly support current and future products.

While experience in defence or aerospace is beneficial, candidates from other regulated or complex engineering sectors are also encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and maintain Java-based software tools and architectures.
  • Contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements engagement through to integration, verification and proving.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team to maintain delivery momentum.
  • Support automated integration and testing activities, ensuring high-quality, reliable outputs.
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation to support development and assurance.
  • Contribute ideas around tools, techniques and process improvements to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Strong software engineering background with an understanding of system-level impacts.
  • Commercial experience developing software in Java (ideally 6+ years).
  • Experience working across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Collaborative approach and ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to work on-site full time in Bristol.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience with additional programming languages such as Ada.
  • Knowledge of DDS middleware and Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Familiarity with safety-critical or high-integrity standards such as DefStan 00-55, DO-178C or IEC 61508.
  • Background in defence, aerospace, or other regulated engineering sectors.

This role is a replacement position within an established team. No travel required. Candidates must be eligible to hold SC clearance and be able to start with it in place.
