Overview

Terms of Engagement for Independent Contractor

Duration: 12 months, approx. 12-20 hours per week.

Compensation: flat fee paid monthly that reflects regional considerations.

Location: Remote in Australia, Canada (PST), India, Malaysia, New Zealand, UK, U.S. (PST).

Role

We currently seek a contract editor for our English-language communications, primarily those of our operations in Malaysia and India. In this role, you will be part of our editing team, helping ensure the polish, credibility, voice, and \”oomf\” of public-facing Mercy For Animals communications across multiple platforms and formats.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Edit written communications for concision, clarity, and grace
  • Review written communications for organization of ideas, balanced development of ideas, and overall coherence
  • Probe writers as needed for clarification
  • Edit written communications for grammar and punctuation
  • Proofread final content
  • Ensure communications adhere to Mercy For Animals\’ editorial standards and messaging guidelines
  • Fact-check as needed
  • Establish timelines and manage workflow
  • Adhere to all applicable human resource and administrative policies and procedures

Qualifications

Our editing team requirements:

  • Bachelor\’s degree or higher in writing, linguistics, or related field
  • Proficiency in English
  • Outstanding ability to read and write in English
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Rigorous attention to detail
  • Thorough knowledge of Google Docs
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn the Associated Press Stylebook

Hours and Compensation

As a contract editor, you are expected to commit 12–20 hours per week for one year. Compensation will be a flat fee paid monthly that reflects regional considerations. We will discuss with you and agree on a rate before you begin any work for us, and our agreement will be clearly established in the contract.
