Scope Of The Role

Reporting to the BU Head of Design, the Design Manager will be a self-starter working on their own initiative.

They will be responsible for the management and co-ordination all aspects of the Design as they relate to the project scope of work.

Leading and managing the Mercury Engineering and Design Team and interfacing with the Client Team, the Design Manager will set clear direction and expectations for the Safe, on time, on budget delivery of the fully integrated build.

The core project management team, of which you are a key part, will create the vision, provide leadership, set targets, create processes and procedures, manage the Quality and ensure adherence to all EHS requirements across all projects.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role

  • Develop strong team synergy through communication and support.
  • Ensure each individual within the team feel valued, appreciated and included.
  • Ensure there is full adherence to the CPM process with regular performance reviews.

  • Ensure Mercury Procedures are in place and being adhered to on your project
  • Ensure you and your team have fully reviewed and understand the Project specifications and documentation.
  • Ensure engineering is developed to meet procurement and production deadlines.
  • Operational excellence
  • Bring operational excellence across all aspects of the Design Management
  • Nurture Client, Design team and Supply Chain partner engagement.
  • Walk the site regularly and actively participate in the SOR process.
  • Participate in relevant Project Audits. Ensure outcomes attended to.
  • Guide and assist your project team
  • Align your expectations with Project requirements
  • Ensure your expectations are clearly understood
  • Empower your team and support them in their personal and career development.
  • Set clear expectations and track against the KPIs
  • Specific Requirements
  • Assist in developing Design Delivery Schedule along with client, Project Manager, Design team and consultants.
  • Develop comprehensive scope-of-work and contract document deliverables list for each related discipline.
  • Negotiate scope-of-work, deliverables and price with consulting firms.
  • Procure the design from a consultant design partner from initial tender enquiry to appointment.
  • Assist Project Manager in incorporating onto a tracking sheet all internal and external design and cost issues.
  • Manage distribution and production of project workload within the project team and design consultant team.
  • Collaborate on new design issues/changes and research projects with team.
  • Review completed design is accurate and precise.
  • Manage design document control.
  • Project prioritization of design, assignment and management to designers.
  • Lead with effective supervision an experienced design team to ensure delivery on schedule.
  • Closely track design deliverables to ensure project milestones are met.
  • Implement recovery strategy if slippage is detected.
  • Participate in departmental strategic planning.
  • Assist technically internal and external customers.
  • Planning, programming and reporting
  • Participate in design meetings and provide continual input to optimize design and minimize futile work.
  • Liaising with clients, insurance companies, consultants and architects.

Essential Criteria For The Role

  • Design or Engineering Degree or recognised relevant qualification
  • 5+ years’ experience in Design management
  • Thorough knowledge of Civil, Structural and Architectural packages
  • Flexibility in working patterns where necessary.
  • Ability to efficiently manage a team by setting expectations, delegation, and review.
  • Strong communication & computer skills,
  • Ability to work on own initiative and possess strong interpersonal and communications skills.
