Key Responsibilities of the Role
- Become familiar with, comply with and enforce Mercury SOPs including Control of Hazardous Energies Procedure and Operating and Energisation Procedures for Work on LV & MV Systems, through permitting and auditing.
- Understand and adhere to Permit to Work and Lock-Out Tag-Out Procedures; follow safe working practices.
- Understand Mercury site-specific ESSOW (Electrical Safe System of Work).
- Review and understand Sub-Contractor COHE (Control of Hazardous Energies) and Sub-Contractor Electrical RAMS; ensure works align with client directives.
- Operational control of LOTO systems and safe switching (Energisation/Isolations) during the commissioning phase.
- Ensure warning signs are in place and checked regularly; report electrical incidents to SAP and Energy Marshall.
- Ensure proper segregation of hazardous areas and correct use of Electrical PPE; secure areas under permit control.
- Complete training deemed necessary by Mercury; identify hazards and implement mitigation measures.
- Assist Senior Authorised Persons with internal audits (Self-Assessment COHE Audit, inspection of temporary electrics).
- Be conversant with arc flash mitigation, PPE selection, condition and maintenance; authorise Energisation and Isolation Requests when criteria are met for the nominated voltage range; follow Senior Authorised Person instructions.
- Provide evidence of required qualifications (e.g., colour vision test) if not provided during proof of qualification.
Technical / Essential Criteria
- Be a qualified electrician awarded the National Craft Certificate or equivalent, verified by Naric, or have a suitable electrical award equivalent to Level 6 or higher on the National Framework of Qualifications.
- Ability to interpret and work from project drawings (SLDs, Wiring Diagrams, schematics) and understand EN and local code regulations; stay conversant with latest local electrical regulations.
- Complete recognised courses in Verification, Testing and Certification where required.
- Experience inspecting, commissioning, troubleshooting control systems and power circuits; perform commissioning duties (MCCs, VSDs, distribution panels, motors, lighting, small power circuits).
- Demonstrate understanding of policies and work methods for commissioning electrical equipment; interpret documentation such as Punchlist, As Built Procedures, Vendor Manuals.
- Perform testing (Insulation Resistance, Point to Point, grounding) with appropriate equipment; ensure pre-connection/dead test results are compliant; take live readings post-energisation and record results; perform Live Dead Live testing as required.
- Execute switching schedules/notes post-approval; perform safe energisations and isolations; apply correct tags to equipment awaiting energisation; assist in the commissioning process from Level 1 to Level 5.
- Enforce Electrical Permit to Work system; manage electrical safety permits for the relevant voltage range (Low/Medium Voltage).
- Establish positive working relationships with site supervisors, peers and vendors; review commissioning processes; assist in electrical incident investigations.
- Monitor PPE and safety equipment; advise on calibration or replacement as required; have completed a recognised MV/HV switching course if appointed as MV Authorised Person; minimum three years’ experience working on MV systems.
Communication / Reporting
- Manage Mercury’s “In Progress” snagging system to ensure safe and controlled works; report electrical events to SAP; issue weekly progress reports highlighting changes in electrical conditions.
- Maintain timely, clear, and precise communication with SAP and CxA regarding switching operations; communicate concerns to the Person in Charge of an Electrical Installation and Senior Engineer.
