Overview
We are seeking a technically rigorous Freelance Electrical Design Engineer to join a leading consultancy on a high-stakes contract. This role is dedicated to delivering sophisticated electrical system designs for high-security public sector facilities, specifically within Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) environments. In this capacity, you will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical infrastructure meets the stringent reliability, safety, and compliance standards required for critical national infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and specification of complex electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, emergency systems, and security-integrated electrical services.
- Ensure all designs strictly adhere to UK building regulations, British Standards (BS 7671), and specific Ministry of Justice technical standards.
- Produce high-quality technical drawings, calculations (using industry-standard software), and specifications from feasibility through to detailed design stages.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams and public sector stakeholders to ensure designs meet the operational requirements of high-security environments.
- Conduct rigorous design reviews to mitigate risk and ensure the utmost reliability in zero-fail environments.
Candidate Requirements
- 8+ years of progressive electrical design experience post-graduation.
- BEng or MEng in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
- Expert knowledge of Amtech, Dialux/Relux, and AutoCAD/Revit.
- Previous experience working on HMP projects or similar high-security/government facilities is highly advantageous.
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a remote/flexible environment.
