Mercom Communications is seeking a Public Relations & Communications Account Executive to support our EMEA team at a growing global energy communications practice. The ideal candidate is preferably based in London.
We are looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced agency environment, enjoys tackling complex subject matter and can turn technical topics and business issues into compelling stories and communications campaigns.
The ideal candidate will have public relations and media relations experience, preferably within the energy, power, renewables, utilities, infrastructure or marine sectors. Agency experience and established relationships with energy, business and national media are highly desirable.
Responsibilities
- Support the day-to-day management of client accounts, anticipate client needs and maintain a high standard of quality across deliverables.
- Develop a strong understanding of each client's business, technologies, markets and communications objectives.
- Demonstrate strong tactical proficiency in media relations, including developing and executing media outreach strategies and proactively pitching journalists on an ongoing basis.
- Build and maintain relationships with energy, business, financial, national and trade media.
- Identify emerging news, policy, market and industry developments that can create communications opportunities for clients.
- Consistently produce high-quality, clear and persuasive written content for external and internal communications.
- Develop new story angles, media campaigns, thought leadership opportunities and social media campaigns.
- Write and distribute media pitches, press releases, articles, bylined commentary, B2B social content, executive scripts, talking points, briefing materials and other communications content.
- Support executive positioning and thought leadership programmes.
- Identify and secure speaking opportunities for Mercom clients at relevant conferences and industry events.
- Coordinate conference and event activities for clients and represent clients at events and trade shows when required.
- Closely track energy, communications and media trends to bring fresh thinking and new opportunities to clients.
- Contribute to the operational performance of accounts, ensuring high-quality work while adhering to deadlines, scopes and account budgets.
- Collaborate with Mercom's global teams and support international client programmes as needed.
- Be available as reasonably required to meet deadlines and coordinate with colleagues and clients across global time zones.
Desired Experience & Skills
We are looking for a proactive, goal-oriented communications professional who takes ownership of their work and takes pride in achieving meaningful results for clients.
- At least two years of public relations or communications experience, ideally within energy, power, utilities, infrastructure or marine sectors.
- Agency PR experience supporting multiple clients, accounts and deadlines is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience securing media coverage and proactively developing relationships with journalists.
- Familiarity with energy and business media, from national and financial outlets to specialist energy and trade publications.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce media-ready content.
- Existing relationships with energy, business, financial or environmental journalists are a strong advantage.
- Strong understanding of the major issues shaping the energy sector and broader energy transition, with an interest in continually expanding that knowledge.
- Ability to understand technical and complex subjects and translate them into clear, accurate and compelling communications.
- Strong interpersonal, client service and presentation skills.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to identify opportunities, solve problems and overcome obstacles.
- Highly organised, with the ability to prioritise multiple assignments and perform effectively under pressure.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently while collaborating effectively within a global team.
- Degree in public relations, communications, journalism or a related field preferred.
Location
London-based candidates are strongly preferred.
