The Firm
Mercer & Hole is a well-established 28 partner practice with offices in London, St Albans, Milton Keynes & Rickmansworth. The firm has a prestigious client base throughout the UK and provides a highly professional service with a strong commitment to personal attention at all times. The client base includes a significant number of owner-managed businesses, including partnerships, sole traders and private companies as well as subsidiaries of International groups. In addition, the team also look after the business owners linked to the businesses in question.
The practice has identified a need for an experienced qualified tax adviser with relevant experience in the tax affairs of companies, businesses and their owners. The role will be based in either London, Rickmansworth or Milton Keynes, but potentially completing work for partners across all four offices of the firm. The team operate as one across all locations.
The Role
- Building relationships with a portfolio of clients in our corporate and business tax team.
- Understanding their issues and advising on their compliance obligations whilst also helping them to manage their risk and relationship with HMRC.
- Proactively taking time to consider tax planning opportunities which may be relevant to them, and working with the tax directors and partners to support delivery of this.
- Being a part of developing the wider team, through technical education, soft skill development and on the job training. This will include appraising more junior members of the team including objective setting and having the ability to encourage and foster development of the team.
- Negotiating and raising fees and being responsible for WIP management on your portfolio of clients.
- Contribution to the general management of the corporate and business tax department (12 strong in Milton Keynes, 20+ across the 4 offices). Providing input at regular management meetings.
- Assistance with the training of tax staff either on the job based or by way of participation in regular technical updates.
- Appraisal of junior staff with responsibility for development and performance.
- Assisting on queries arising from our international network; providing support to the Partners on practice development in terms of marketing campaigns and literature, networking, website support, contributing to the firm’s blogs and tweets and raising awareness of topical issues.
- Identifying new opportunities within the client portfolio and working with the wider team to deliver additional services where appropriate.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- ACA and / or CTA qualified.
- Ability to build excellent client relationships.
- An excellent communicator and relationship builder within a team.
- Extensive experience of working with a portfolio of clients to deliver on annual corporation tax reporting requirements.
- Experience dealing with complex groups and related tax challenges.
- Demonstrate broad and strong technical tax knowledge and experience. Mixed tax knowledge would be a benefit but corporate tax experience is priority for the role.
- Ability to work within deadlines and deliver on agreed timescales.
- Experience of identifying opportunities for business development on tax clients (and ideally across other service lines).
- Ideally proficient in Alphatax but training can be given.
This is a very varied role and provides a great opportunity for you to develop and progress within the firm. We would consider both full and part time applications.
The Person
The successful candidate will be a qualified CTA, ACA or ACCA and have post-qualification experience of working within a business tax department of an accountancy practice. A high standard of written and verbal communication is essential. Strong organisation and time management skills will be required for the role. Being an experienced and flexible team worker, the strongest candidates will share Mercer & Hole’s focused client service ethic and respond proactively and positively to the demands of a growing team.
Salary will be dependent upon experience. Mercer & Hole also offers a contributory pension scheme under salary sacrifice, life cover at 4 x salary, 28 days annual holiday and other benefits.
