How you’ll play your part
In this role, you will work closely with Finance, MI, Data Governance, IT and wider business stakeholders to translate business requirements and user stories into robust data models, semantic layers, calculations, measures, KPIs and reporting outputs. The role will support operational interfaces, aggregated data files, regulatory and operational reporting, and analytical use cases. We are looking for a hands-on data professional with strong expertise in Databricks, Azure Data Factory, SQL, Power BI, DAX and data modelling techniques. The role will contribute to the migration from the existing data warehouse and Cognos reporting environment into the new Azure Data Lake, helping to create scalable, trusted and reusable data assets for MBFS. The role will also provide line management, coaching and mentoring to one Data Apprentice, supporting their development while strengthening data capability across the MI team.
Main Accountabilities
Data Modelling Activity:
- Design and deliver data models and schemas for each new data source tranche selected for the strategic Data Lake solution, aligned to agreed user stories and business priorities.
- Define and build calculations, measures, Critical Data Elements, KPIs and data quality criteria that support trusted reporting, operational interfaces and analytical outputs.
- Develop data models and schemas for new Finance dashboards, ensuring consistency, scalability and reusability across the MI reporting landscape.
- Support the migration of relevant data sources and associated Cognos reports from the existing Data Warehouse to the new Azure Data Lake.
- Create and maintain semantic layers that enable business users and data analysts to consume data consistently and efficiently.
- Work with Data Governance to define, document and manage common data modelling components, standards and ownership principles.
- Identify opportunities to enable advanced analytics, machine learning and AI through well-structured, high-quality data models.
Finance & MI Team Reporting Activity:
- Partner with MI team members to improve reporting efficiency through enhanced data models, automation and common reporting logic.
- Review the current reporting catalogue to identify duplication, common Critical Data Elements and opportunities for simplification.
- Provide operational cover and technical support to the wider MI team where required.
- Develop and maintain Finance and Controlling MI reports using Power BI, Power BI Report Builder, Cognos or other agreed tools.
- Contribute to improvements in data governance, data quality, reporting standards, data literacy and user training across MBFS UK.
Data Engineering Activity:
- Use Databricks, Azure Data Factory and SQL to support data engineering delivery where required, working closely with the wider Data Engineering team.
- Contribute to, and influence, the overall data architecture and solution design for MI deliverables.
- Navigate the MBFS IT landscape to progress delivery, including data configurations, data networks, infrastructure, connectors and integration points across source systems.
Line Management:

About you
Technical Skills and Experience:
- Expert-level experience with Databricks, Azure Data Factory and SQL, including SQL queries, stored procedures and integration patterns.
- Strong experience in data modelling, schema design and semantic layer creation, including measures, calculations, KPIs and Critical Data Elements.
- Practical understanding of medallion architecture and how to apply it to scalable Data Lake and reporting solutions.
- Strong working knowledge of Power BI, Power BI Report Builder and DAX for dashboard and report development.
- Experience using Microsoft productivity and automation tools, including Power Automate, Power Pivot, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.
- Good understanding of database management systems, ETL frameworks and data integration concepts.
- Understanding of Azure Data Lake design, dimensional modelling, data mining and reporting architecture.
- Knowledge of Cognos is desirable but not essential.
