Key Responsibilities

Systems Simulation

Providing simulation, analysis and engineering tooling support to help understand, predict and improve race-car performance. The role combines tool development, engineering analysis, dynamic simulation and race-event support, giving exposure to the full lifecycle from concept through to trackside operations.

  • Car behaviour analysis and engineering tools: Analyse vehicle data and simulation results using Python-based tools to investigate car behaviour, assess system performance, diagnose anomalies, and develop automated workflows and data visualisation solutions.
  • Dynamic simulation: Develop and apply simulation models using tools such as Siemens Amesim to understand, predict, and improve system behaviour.
  • Event support: Support race events from the Race Support Room by monitoring vehicle system health and performance, investigating issues and contributing to real-time engineering decisions.
  • CFD and fluid-flow analysis: Use CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent and ParticleWorks to investigate cooling and lubrication systems and support design decisions.

Structures

Delivering right-first-time structural engineering for high-performance mechanical and composite components, working closely with designers and test engineers to support race car and test-rig structures throughout their lifecycle.

  • Structural analysis: Analyse components and assemblies using finite element analysis and hand calculations to ensure stiffness, strength, fatigue life and structural integrity.
  • Finite element modelling: Develop and analyse finite element models using tools such as Abaqus, HyperWorks or similar.
  • Hand calculations: Perform calculations for stiffness, strength, fatigue and stability, and verify finite element results.
  • Composite structures: Develop an understanding of composite materials, laminate behaviour and composite structural analysis.
  • Advanced analysis: Gain exposure to finite element non-linear (contact/plasticity), optimisation and fatigue analyses.
  • Design and test collaboration: Work with designers to evaluate concepts and optimise race-car components, and with test engineers to interpret results and validate analysis methods.

About You

Essential:

  • Academic eligibility: Be studying a relevant engineering or science degree, such as Mechanical, Automotive, Aeronautical, Motorsport, Mechatronics, Electronics or Physics.
  • Course status: Have at least one year remaining on your current course, or be enrolled on your next course, when the placement begins (Masters or PhD offers require evidence of enrolment).
  • Learning mindset: Be curious, analytical and committed to continuous development, adapting quickly to change.
  • Ownership and communication: Take responsibility for your work, drive tasks forward with initiative, and share information clearly and confidently with a range of stakeholders.
  • Resilience and collaboration: Show determination and attention to detail, and work effectively within a collaborative, high-performance team.

Desirable:

  • Programming and automation: Experience using Python or similar programming languages for data processing, analysis, automation or visualisation.
  • Engineering analysis: Experience analysing data, solving engineering problems and applying numerical methods using tools such as Excel.
  • CAD exposure: Experience with CAD tools, particularly 3DX or similar design environments.
  • Practical experience: Hands-on involvement through Formula Student, motorsport, kit cars, test rigs or similar projects.
  • Wider interests: Demonstrable interests outside your course, and a track record in outreach, volunteering or mentoring.

Additional desirable criteria (placement-specific):

  • Systems Simulation: Experience with dynamic simulation tools (Simulink, Dymola, Amesim), CFD (Fluent, ParticleWorks) or similar modelling and simulation software.
  • Structures: Finite Element Analysis (Abaqus, HyperWorks) of composite/metallic structures with non-linear contact and plasticity, optimisation (Tosca) or fatigue analyses (FE-safe) and hand calculations.

Full training is provided in our simulation packages and analysis techniques.
