Overview: The purpose of this role is to become a multi‑skilled Mechanical Simulation Engineer, conducting simulations on components, assemblies and systems. The engineer will have entry‑level experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi‑Body Dynamics (MBD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). They will develop theoretical and practical knowledge of mechanical systems, deliver static, dynamic, thermal and fatigue analyses, and undertake simulation work for the most complex problems within the F1 product engineering group. The engineer will help ensure that designs released by the product engineering group are right‑first‑time while meeting competing targets of performance, reliability, time, mass and cost.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver world‑class simulation‑driven solutions supported by first‑principles engineering to meet demanding project targets.
- Create and develop simulation processes that balance speed and accuracy.
- Develop multiple models for a particular problem, ranging from simple/quick to complex/accurate, matched to the available timeframe or design stage.
- Ensure simulations correlate well with empirical data and measured power unit data.
- Technically develop and improve simulation processes.
- Champion best practice and provide support and training to peers.
- Communicate technical solutions to stakeholders, including writing technical reports.
Required Skills:
- Experience with hand calculations and complex simulations.
- First‑principles engineering.
- FAE, MBD and CFD: at least entry knowledge and some experience or curiosity in one type, very good knowledge of another, and some knowledge of the third.
- Working with internal combustion engines / rotating machinery and their sub‑systems, including mechanical and thermal loading.
- Use of analytical tools to enhance design of complex, highly loaded components and systems.
- Finite element analysis of components and assemblies; knowledge of thermal, mechanical and fatigue loadings.
- Knowledge of Abaqus and Abaqus/CAE (meshing with Hypermesh or SimLab) and fatigue analysis using FE‑Safe.
- Knowledge of MBD using Dymola and/or AVL Excite (preferred).
- Knowledge of CFD using StarCCM+ (preferred).
- Understanding of material properties.
Demonstrated Capability:
- FEA: comprehension of mechanical systems, geometry preparation, meshing techniques, material properties, load application, boundary conditions, contact interactions, solver optimisation, static/dynamic/thermal/linear perturbation/visco/fatigue analysis, duty cycles, load histories, high‑cycle and low‑cycle fatigue, and interpretation of results for realistic improvements.
- MBD: comprehension of mechanical systems, vibration theory, natural frequencies, mode shapes, excitation forces, forced response, resonance, Fourier analysis, and the influence of mass/inertia, stiffness, lash/clearance and damping.
- CFD: comprehension of realistic fluid systems, fluid dynamics theory, turbulence and boundary‑layer models, fluid properties, mesh generation and optimisation, single‑phase and two‑phase flow, conjugate heat transfer, and dynamic velocity/pressure effects.
Preferred Experience:
- Simulation of cooling, lubrication and fuel system components.
- Experience with StarCCM+, Dymola and/or AVL Excite.
- Experience with Abaqus, Abaqus/CAE, Hypermesh or SimLab and FE‑Safe software.
Qualifications:
- Degree qualified (2:1 minimum) in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, Aerospace or a similar engineering discipline.
- A‑Levels in Maths and Physics with very high grades.
