Overview

The purpose of this role is to become a multi-skilled Mechanical Simulation Engineer. You will conduct simulations on components, assemblies and/or systems with entry level experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). You will develop knowledge of mechanical systems and their functionality, deliver static and dynamic analyses (thermal/mechanical/fatigue), and undertake simulation work for complex problems within the F1 product engineering group. The role helps ensure designs released by the product engineering group are right first time while meeting targets for performance, reliability, time, mass and cost.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver world class simulation driven solutions, supported by first principles engineering to meet demanding project targets.
  • Create and develop simulation processes that balance speed and accuracy, including multiple models for a given problem to match the timeframe or design stage.
  • Ensure simulations correlate well with empirical data and measured power unit data.
  • Technically develop and improve processes; champion best practice and provide support and training to peers.
  • Communicate technical solutions to stakeholders, including writing technical reports.

Required knowledge and experience

  • Experience with FEA, MBD and CFD and willingness to develop in all three areas; strong interest or curiosity in one with capability in another.
  • Experience of working with internal combustion engines, rotating machinery, and their sub-systems, including mechanical and thermal loading.
  • Ability to use analytical tools to complement and enhance design of complex, highly loaded components/systems.
  • Familiarity with FEA, including mechanical systems, geometry preparation, meshing, material properties, loads, constraints, boundary conditions, complex contact interactions, and fatigue analysis.
  • Familiarity with MBD concepts (vibration theory, natural frequencies, mode shapes, excitation forces, forced response, damping).
  • Familiarity with CFD concepts (fluid dynamics theory, turbulence models, boundary layer models, mesh generation, conjugate heat transfer).
  • Understanding of materials and their properties.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified (2:1 minimum) in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, Aerospace or similar.
  • A-Levels in Maths and Physics with high grades.
