Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) has been a pioneer in mental health service, advocacy, innovation, and training for nearly a century, working to ensure that people with mental health needs achieve meaningful, healthy lives in their communities.
MHALA is among the largest and most comprehensive nonprofit mental health agencies in Los Angeles County. The agency supports over 19,000 low-income and no-income individuals annually with integrated services. MHALA achieves impact in the areas of mental and physical healthcare, homelessness and housing, supported employment, and wellness and financial services, with special programs for Veterans and transition-age youth.
MHALA also provides training programs for individuals joining the behavioral health workforce and for the larger community around mental health issues.

Human Resources Assistant (Part-Time)
21 hours per week / $25.00 – $26.00 per hour
(The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.)
Summary: The HR Assistant will support our Human Resources aka People department with administrative and clerical tasks. They will assist in day-to-day operations, help maintain employee records, support recruitment efforts, and provide timely and effective assistance to employees and HR staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. This is not an exhaustive task list, and other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate or necessary by the supervisor or program director. - Provides coordination for New Hire Orientation
- Provides coordination for PRO-ACT trainings
- Assists in data entry into Paylocity including Auto Insurance and Driver Licenses
- Supports leadership with identifying and tracking monthly reports i.e., Exit Surveys, past due Auto Insurance, and Driver Licenses
- Maintains employee files and creates new hire files
- Supports HR team with exit interviews and managing separation tasks to ensure up to date employee files.
- Helps support MHALA benefits, wellness programs and other HR functions/programs.
- Provides administrative support for internal training team, as needed.
- Participates in team, staff, and local recruitment events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Position Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED required
- Associate degree in Business Administration, preferred
- Demonstrated ability to provide coordination to diverse staff who possess a wide range of skills, abilities, and professional competencies.
- Understanding of HR functions and best practices
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with HRIS software is a plus
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Driving with a current class C driver’s license, a vehicle for transportation, proof of valid automobile insurance, and the ability to be insured by MHALA liability insurance are conditions of employment.
- Day travel to MHALA\’s sites in Long Beach required from time to time.
- TB clearance and annual retesting are conditions of employment.
- MHALA is no longer requiring COVID-19 vaccinations or booster shots; however, this may become a requirement in the future.
