Location: Clevedon, North Somerset
Salary: £12.90 per hour (£26,832 FTE, based on a 40 hour week)
Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week Monday to Wednesday, 8.00am to 4.30pm Thursday and Friday, 10.00am to 6.30pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch each day)
About the role
We're looking for a Clinical Coder to join a busy, well-established coding team at a GP surgery in Clevedon, part of a network of ten surgeries across North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. You'll work alongside nine coders who collectively handle around 400 documents per day, ranging from clinical letters and discharge summaries to test results. The role suits someone who is organised, methodical and eager to get the detail right. You will not be making clinical decisions; instead you will match correspondence and results to the correct codes using our established coding protocol, passing any items that require a clinician's judgement to the appropriate person. Attention to detail and patience in learning a complex system are essential.
Training and support
Training begins with a two‑week induction covering health and safety and system familiarisation. By the end of the first month, you will start working on documents independently, building confidence gradually. We anticipate it takes about six months to feel fully competent, and regular quality checks during that period help you settle in with confidence rather than pressure. If you have experience working in a GP surgery, hospital, or another clinical administration setting, you’ll find this familiar; if not, medical terminology training is provided. What matters most is your attention to detail and your experience in a role where accuracy is crucial.
Qualifications – Essential
- GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above, or equivalent experience
- Experience working in an administration role
- Accurate recording of data
- Good working knowledge of Word, Excel, email and databases
- Ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing deadlines
- Tact and sensitivity when handling confidential information
Qualifications – Desired
- Experience working within an administration role in the NHS
- Familiarity with GP clinical systems such as EMIS
- Understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy and physiology
Where this can take you
This role sits within a genuine team structure and offers progression to coding leads, other admin roles, Patient Services Manager or Healthcare Assistant. Advancement depends on your interests and performance.
