Social Media and Communications Officer

Social Media and Communications Officer

Full-Time On-site
Meningitis Research Foundation

Location: Remote or hybrid (Bristol office)

Contract: Full-time, permanent

At Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF), we're united by one goal: a world free from meningitis.

We work in the UK and around the world to fund life‑saving research, influence policy, raise awareness, support people affected by meningitis and drive prevention. Through the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO), our worldwide network of advocates, we also bring people and organisations together to strengthen awareness and advocacy and accelerate action against meningitis.

We're looking for a creative and enthusiastic Social Media and Communications Officer to help us tell our story, engage our audiences and make our voice heard.

About the role

This is a varied, hands‑on communications role and a great opportunity for someone looking to build their career in social media and communications while working for a cause that makes a real difference.

You'll help plan, create, publish and evaluate content across MRF and CoMO's social media channels, as well as supporting wider communications through campaigns, email, newsletters, blogs and website content. You'll also be involved in online community engagement and help support our day‑to‑day media relations activity.

From developing engaging social posts and short‑form content to spotting emerging conversations and helping bring campaigns to life, no two days will be quite the same.

What you'll be doing

You'll work closely with colleagues across the organisation to:

  • Plan and manage engaging social media content across MRF and CoMO channels.
  • Write, create and publish content for social media, email, newsletters, blogs and the web.
  • Create graphics, reels and short‑form video content.
  • Manage day-to-day social media activity and engage with our online communities.
  • Help deliver organic and paid social media activity and use performance insights to improve our reach and engagement.
  • Support campaigns, awareness days, events and other activities across MRF.
  • Monitor digital trends and social conversations to identify new opportunities.
  • Help coordinate media enquiries, interview arrangements and media monitoring.
  • Support Meningitis in your words, the world's largest collection of meningitis experiences.
  • Use tools including Hootsuite and Canva to help colleagues make effective use of social media and maintain consistent ways of working.

About you

You don't need to have spent years working in communications. We're looking for someone with at least one year's experience in a digital communications, social media or communications role who can demonstrate creativity, strong writing skills and enthusiasm for engaging different audiences.

You'll be someone who:

  • Can write engaging content and adapt your tone for different audiences and digital channels.
  • Has experience planning, creating, scheduling and publishing social media content.
  • Is comfortable engaging with online communities and responding to comments and enquiries.
  • Has excellent written communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Enjoys storytelling and finding creative ways to communicate.
  • Is organised, collaborative and comfortable juggling different priorities.
  • Can interpret social media performance data and use it to suggest improvements.
  • Uses sound judgement when dealing with sensitive health information and people's lived experiences.

Experience creating short‑form video or visual content and familiarity with social media scheduling, monitoring or listening tools would be an advantage. Experience of integrated campaigns, media relations or communications within a charity, health or membership organisation would also be welcome, but these are desirable rather than essential.

If you're looking for your next step in communications and want to use your creativity for a cause with real purpose, this role offers the opportunity to work across a broad mix of social media, digital content, campaigns and communications.

You'll join MRF's wider Fundraising, Marketing and Communications department and report to the Senior Communications and Campaigns Manager, working with colleagues from across the organisation and contributing to both our UK and global communications

Other benefits

  • 25 days' annual leave, plus statutory and public holidays
  • 6% employer pension contribution, alongside a 2% employee contribution
  • Two paid volunteering days each year
  • Time off in Lieu to support a healthy work‑life balance
  • Access to employee discounts through Peninsula
  • BUPA-backed Employee Assistance Programme for you and your immediate family.

Meningitis Research Foundation is committed to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion. We warmly welcome applications from people with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and employment.
