The Forensic Nurse Examiner PRN will actively work within the community to foster safety and support for the client, family, and significant others, using client empowerment and agency/community resources through trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches. The Forensic Nurse will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the victims of trauma and violence, including but not limited to: Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence), Child Abuse, Strangulation, Elder Abuse, Sexual Assault and Abuse. This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings.
The Forensic Nurse is expected to follow protocols established by the Director of SANE/SAFE Program and Chief Nursing Officer for the Forensic Nurse Program for which the Forensic Nurse is employed.
Essential Functions And Basic Duties
- Ability to triage patient to determine if medical exam is needed before forensic exam.
- Coordinate care by all agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault victim and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient.
- Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including head-to-toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation (including photography), and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.
- Perform and document sexual assault and forensic interview accurately.
- Administer appropriate prophylactic medication per protocols.
- Perform all duties as required per Forensic Nursing Program protocols.
- Provide testimony as fact or expert witness for any/all cases performed while FNE and coordinate with attorneys during the judicial process.
- Commit to cover one weekend (rotation dependent on number of active providers) with weekday call shifts divided among active providers, and 1 holiday call shift per year.
- Commit to working in the Forensic Nursing Program for a minimum of 1 year following the completion of training.
- Complete the initial FNE training and preceptor requirements as identified by the FNE program.
- Maintain Forensic Nursing competencies and participate in quality assurance projects, community education, and peer review.
- Must attend 75% of monthly staff meetings in a year.
- Participates in professional development by attending conferences, webinars, and other available trainings.
- Share individual expertise with other members of the Forensic Nursing Program.
- Debriefs as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.
- Takes appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goals of maintaining the safety of all clients and staff.
- Engages with trauma informed practices to all populations and crises.
- Court accompaniment will be compensated at base hourly rate with call-back being compensated at time and a half.
- Maintains client privacy and confidentiality and performs mandatory reporting requirements.
- Ability to develop and implement clinical policies and procedures.
- Professional knowledge and technical ability to analyze, design, test and implement systems and applications.
- Demonstrates independent work initiative, sound judgment and attention to detail.
- FNE PRNs will respond to victim service needs within one hour when on call.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age (21 for driving positions).
- Must be able to legally work in the United States.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be able to pass a drug screen and breath alcohol test (if applicable).
- Must complete employee health meeting.
- Bilingual (Spanish) or other foreign language is preferred.
Education/Licensure/Certification
- Licensed with the Colorado Board of Nursing at the RN level or above.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing.
- SANE training completed by 6 months of hire.
- Unencumbered License/Certification (if applicable).
Experience
- Experience with IT systems and reports preferred.
- Experience leading and teaching individuals and groups preferred.
- Local knowledge about and connections to community health care and social welfare resources is desirable.
