Chief Membership Officer/Deputy General Secretary

Permanent, full-time (flexible working available)

Salary: £99K-£107.5K (plus London Weighting, if applicable)

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is seeking an exceptional Chief Membership Officer/Deputy General Secretaryto drive their membership strategy, enhance participation, and champion the voices of midwives across the UK.

The RCM is the UK’s only membership body run by and for midwives, student midwives, Maternity Support Workers (MSWs), and Maternity Care Assistants (MCAs). Members are supported throughout their careers, from education and training to professional advocacy and workplace support, ensuring their voices are heard and their working lives are improved.

The Role

As Chief Membership Officer/Deputy General Secretary , you will provide strategic leadership to enhance engagement, recruitment, and retention strategies. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the RCM continues to thrive as a membership organisation, fostering participation and activism across the UK. Reporting directly to the CEO/General Secretary/Chief Midwife, you will:

  • Lead the development and delivery of the RCM’s membership participation and activism strategy.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention initiatives to grow and support RCM’s community.
  • Develop and implement engaging campaigns to amplify the voices of midwives and maternity professionals.
  • Act as a key member of the Executive Management Team, contributing to strategic decision-making.
  • Support the CEO/General Secretary/Chief Midwife as Deputy General Secretary, representing the RCM in external groups and committees.
  • Lead and mentor senior staff, fostering a high-performing and motivated team.
  • Ensure corporate cohesion across the UK’s regions and devolved nations.
