The predicted salary is between 35000 - 40000 £ per year.

This is a home-based role, requiring travel to London once per week/month for Staff Day, plus occasional UK travel. All travel expenses are covered.

Salary £35,000-40,000 depending on experience with excellent benefits including 25 days holiday (plus statutory/public holiday days), home worker contract, Pension scheme, Private health cover for the employee, Life insurance, and a non-contractual annual performance bonus which pays up to 10% of gross pay.

The Technical Officer plays a key role in developing and delivering innovative, practical approaches to technical regulation and standards that support members in placing products on the market safely, legally and efficiently. Working across defined product and regulatory areas, the role contributes to the development of industry positions that move beyond prescriptive compliance towards proportionate risk management, due diligence and good regulatory outcomes. The Technical Officer supports members and works in partnership with government, standards bodies and international stakeholders by providing clear, evidence-based technical input, helping the Association navigate new and emerging regulatory challenges in ways that deliver real value for the industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for leading on matters relating to UK and EU standards and regulation for Domestic Appliances, both large and small.
  • Take full ownership of a portfolio of product groups as the association lead contact for specific technical matters relating to conformity and performance.
  • Contribute to horizon scanning, early assessment and interpretation of emerging regulatory and standards developments, supporting proportionate and risk-based industry approaches.
  • Manage actions and priorities to ensure timely, high-quality technical input and effective member representation.
  • Review, interpret and circulate incoming technical and regulatory information so member views can be formed and represented effectively.
  • Write responses to consultations and calls for input, in collaboration with members. Create content for newsletters, website and publications.
  • Maintain a close and regular dialogue with member company representatives to ensure their active participation in group activities.
  • Represent the views of members on technical matters at standards meetings and with government departments and other bodies.
  • Attend meetings both nationally and internationally to represent members' interests relating to the review, creation and updating of standards and regulation for a given set of product categories or regulatory areas.
  • Organise effective meetings of member Panels dealing with specific issues.
  • Deal with enquiries from Members, government agencies and from other Stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of meetings in outside bodies where the association holds a secretariat/chairperson position.
The PersonEssential
  • Technical experience in a consumer (electrical) environment, including experience of placing products on the market and engaging with regulatory, conformity or compliance processes.
  • An understanding of Standards and Regulation detail and process relating to consumer electrical/domestic appliances.
  • Excellent communication skills (presenting, written & verbal). The ability to extract pertinent information from technical documents and to explain them in clear and concise English to both technical and non-technical people.
  • Relationship management.
  • Strong organisational, planning and prioritising skills.
  • Good ICT skills (including full Office 365 suite & Copilot).
  • Track record of working on detailed proposals with competing demands and responding to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to research new technology or technical areas.
  • Ability to work alone, with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of chemical, waste, safety and circular economy standards and regulatory matters.
  • Knowledge of environmental standards and regulatory matters relating to consumer electricals including ecodesign and energy labelling.
  • Project Management.
  • Knowledge of standards and regulatory matters relating to cyber security or energy smart appliances.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulation relating to consumer electronics.
  • A degree or equivalent in an appropriate field such as engineering or science.
  • Networks within UK and international Standards bodies.
  • Knowledge of Policy formation processes.
  • An understanding of the role of Trade Bodies.
  • Experience in a similar or related role.
