Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pain Management

The Royal Marsden Pain Management Service is excited to offer an excellent opportunity for an experienced and motivated nurse to join our specialist team. As a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist or Band 6 (developing role), you will play a key role within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, delivering expert assessment, management, and coordination of care for patients across our Chelsea (London) and Sutton (Surrey) sites. You will contribute to the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

This is a varied and rewarding role that combines advanced clinical practice with leadership and service development. Alongside providing high-quality patient care, you will support the growth of colleagues through teaching and mentorship, both formally and informally. You will also take an active role in service improvement, leading audits, contributing to research, and driving initiatives that enhance patient care and outcomes.

The successful applicant will be based primarily at their preferred site, with flexibility to work across both locations in line with service needs.

Main duties of the job:

• The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Pain Management plays a pivotal role in delivering and enhancing specialist pain management services across The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, supporting both inpatient and outpatient care at the Chelsea and Sutton sites.
• This advanced clinical role focuses on the assessment and management of acute, chronic, and complex pain in patients with cancer, including those referred to specialist clinics such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, neuromodulation, and capsaicin services.
• As an expert practitioner, the CNS will provide direct patient care while also leading service development initiatives, promoting excellence in cancer pain management through clinical leadership, innovation, education, and research.

Education/Qualifications:

• Essential: Teaching and mentorship qualification, evidence of degree level studies in specific pain related subjects/qualification in oncology (Band 7 CNS only), physical assessment course/Independent nurse prescriber.
• Desirable: Relevant MSc level of learning or working towards, evidence of research in pain management/publications.

Experience:

• Essential: Previous experience in pain management at Band 6 or above or in critical care, preferably within oncology. Experience at Band 6 or above in a surgical ward, critical care, or recovery setting within oncology.
• Able to conduct reflective practice and participate in clinical supervision.
• Ability/experience of developing skills of others through a range of teaching/training methods.
• Ability to lead and influence change.
• Evidence of effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with multidisciplinary team members.
• Demonstrated negotiating and influencing skills.
• Demonstrable specialist knowledge in pain management.
• Ability to demonstrate self-motivation and motivate others.
• Ability to make sound decisions, organise and prioritise workload, and work effectively as part of a team.
• Computer literate, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
• Teaching, assessment, and presentation skills.
• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
• Clear understanding of safeguarding principles for vulnerable populations.

Other Requirements:

• Essential: The postholder is expected to demonstrate flexibility to meet the needs of the service. Depending on site preference, those based primarily at Chelsea may be required to work at the Sutton site up to a maximum of one day per week.
