Job summary

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and skilled HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic Point of Care Testing Team. The successful applicant joining the team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, will play a pivotal role in the delivery of high‑quality Point of Care Testing services within the team to support our end users and the patients they care for.

Main duties

  • Practice as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in POCT across all sites within CUH remit.
  • Assist in service delivery providing high level support and training of end users/staff in use of POCT equipment, deputising for the Quality Lead where necessary.
  • Act as an implementation specialist to support project management of device integration into the service.
  • Be the eHospital Application Analyst for the team, qualified in at least one Epic application (training provided) and work with the eHospital analyst team to deliver changes related to the POCT service.
  • Communicate regularly with POCT service users, listening to and analysing their needs, and help them to agree clinical best practice standards, future workflows and system optimisation. Analyse current workflows and either match these to those already built into the Epic system or negotiate and facilitate agreement for changes in working practice. Modify the Epic system using configuration tools to tailor the system so it works effectively for our patients and staff.
  • Help to test the system thoroughly to ensure that it is safe, usable, secure and robust to ensure it works as expected.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • HCPC registration.
  • BSc or equivalent.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma, Diploma of Specialist Practice or equivalent biomedical science related, postgraduate M‑level academic qualification or significant demonstrable experience of working at specialist BMS (AfC B6) level within a directly related field.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Evidence of CPD.
  • Training qualifications.
  • Project Management qualifications.
  • POCT qualification e.g. PgCert, PgDip.
  • EPIC Certified in at least one application.

Essential Experience

  • Worked in routine areas of pathology laboratory as a registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Worked routinely in a laboratory POCT section or dedicated POCT service.
  • Experience of working in highly pressured/sensitive ward areas.
  • Experience of supervision of staff.
  • Experience of using a Laboratory information system (LIMS).

Desirable Experience

  • Specialised investigations.
  • Trained to use multiple POCT devices.
  • Use of the POCT information systems.
  • Use of EPIC.
  • Use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience of working in application support.
  • Experience of delivery of benefits from the implementation of technology / services.
  • Experience as a laboratory information management system administrator.
  • Experience with laboratory interfaces.
  • Change management experience.
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS.

Essential Knowledge

  • Understands the role of POCT in an NHS Foundation Trust and laboratory workflows.
  • Computer literate.
  • Health and safety procedures.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications for service, quality and audit.
  • Awareness of the clinical implications of pre and post analytical errors.

Essential Skills

  • Able to work equally well under own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Ability to meet conflicting deadlines and balance multiple tasks concurrently whilst remaining calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work in an organised manner and to high standards.
  • Ability to undertake quality management tasks including CAPAs, document control and audit.
