As a Registered Nurse working within the Vaccination service, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering a safe and effective service for the administration of seasonal and maternal vaccinations within a clinical setting. The post holder will offer vaccinations for inpatients, outpatients, antenatal patients, and eligible staff using both National and local PGD's or Written Instructions.

The post holder will undertake activities such as:

  • Clinical assessment
  • Dilution and drawing up of vaccine from multi-dose vials
  • Training and offering post vaccine observation support

Main duties of the job include:

  • The configuration of the vaccination area
  • Collecting and checking vaccines and recording ambient and fridge temperatures
  • Conducting clinical assessments
  • The review of complex medical histories and potential adverse reactions
  • Preparation of the vaccine prior to administration by the vaccinators using aseptic technique and following national and local procedures
  • Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures
  • Completing all required vaccination documentation (NIVS, RAVS, Pinnacle, BadgerNet, Careflow) and sending notifications to GPs as required
  • Engaging with service users to increase uptake of vaccinations, reducing health inequalities and encouraging inclusion for all groups
  • Establishing regular relevant training for team members
  • Supporting the introduction of new vaccines as required

Responsibilities for direct/indirect patient care include:

  • Providing specialist advice and technical services in relation to the care of patients
  • Engaging in daily team safety briefing sessions
  • Working independently, under supervision
  • Planning, advising and recommending treatment when necessary
  • Handling difficult conversations and converting complex technical information into easily understandable communication

Responsibilities for policy and service development implementation include:

  • Observing infection control procedures
  • Adhering to Professional Code of conduct and maintaining own professional development ensuring fit for practice
  • Ensuring that all NHS statutory & mandatory training is kept up to date
  • Attending all mandatory training as needed, including BLS, Anaphylaxis and Immunisation training
  • Following local and national policy making comments on proposals for change
  • Responding to queries or escalating to the clinical supervisor
  • Supporting more junior staff in the provision of care including training in the use of protocols as needed

Responsibilities for financial and physical resources include:

  • Ensuring the safe and effective use of equipment and other resources
  • Ensuring vaccine, stationery and health promotion resources are available in immediate work area and monitored appropriately

Responsibilities for human resources include:

  • Improving and maintaining personal and professional development by participating in continuing professional development activities
  • Attending statutory and mandatory training
  • Having an awareness of Trust policies and procedures that affect the management of staff
  • Being involved in the induction and supervision of new and existing staff

Responsibilities for information resources include:

  • Effective use of IT support systems to enhance direct and indirect care delivery
  • Using all electronic patient record systems required
  • Submitting accurate and timely activity data as required
  • Completing local tally charts and data collection accurately

  • Following local and national policies including Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and national protocols or standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Assisting in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety and security of self and others in work area
  • Assisting in the identification and assessment of risks in work activities
  • Practising in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal codes of the site and its protocols and guidelines
  • Working with the team to maintain high standards of infection control in the clinical area
  • Actively promoting diversity and sustaining relationships that promote dignity, rights and responsibilities
  • Identifying and taking action to address discrimination and oppression
  • Ensuring that the practice complies with Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldicott principles
  • Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse
  • Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made
  • Maintaining compliance with staff mandatory training requirement

Essential qualifications include:

  • Registered Healthcare Professional
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience at working in a specialist area
  • Knowledge of immunisations and associated schedules
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Clear communicator with excellent oral, writing and presentation skills
  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
  • Excellent data entry skills and sharp ability to ensure accuracy
