This vacancy is currently only open to internal applicants at WAHT. We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse to join SDEC at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, as a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your clinical leadership skills while helping us deliver safe, effective and person-centred care to patients with acute medical needs.
Working closely with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will provide visible leadership and act as a positive role model for colleagues. You will coordinate care, support the safe running of the ward and help ensure that high standards are maintained across admission, treatment, transfer and discharge. You will supervise and support nurses, healthcare support workers and learners, contributing to teaching, competency assessment, induction and professional development. The role also includes supporting workforce planning, quality improvement, audit, incident learning, infection prevention, medicines management and the effective use of ward resources.

Main duties of the job:
- The post holder will support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the day-to-day leadership and coordination of SDEC, ensuring safe, effective and compassionate care for patients with acute medical needs.
- They will act as a clinical role model, assess and respond to patient needs, oversee admissions, transfers and discharge planning, and work closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based care and a positive patient experience.
- The role includes coordinating staffing and resources, maintaining professional, medicines-management, infection-prevention and risk-management standards, and responding appropriately to incidents, concerns and service pressures.
- The post holder will supervise, teach and support registered nurses, healthcare support workers and learners, contribute to induction, appraisal and competency development, and participate in audit, quality improvement and the continued development of ward services.

Job responsibilities:
- To ensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources and to be available for advice and support within the ward/unit.
- Provide effective leadership and to act as a good role model, as well as to liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.
- To supervise junior staff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.
- Achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training; develop and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice (i.e. Venepuncture, Cannulation).
Operational Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities for establishing and maintaining communication and relationship both internally and externally.
- Establish and maintain effective communication and foster good working relationships with all multidisciplinary teams, both internal and external.
- Provide and receive complex and/or sensitive information from patients and staff.
- For example, breaking bad news to patients, giving complex information about procedures and their outcomes, dealing with performance issues, holding staff meetings.
- Able to support and talk to distressed patients, visitors, and staff members.
- Responsible for cascading information to ward staff and chairing staff meetings from which minutes are provided.
- Make use of electronic internal/external mail and Internet systems as appropriate and necessary.
- Deal effectively with comments, complaints, or incidents that affect staff and users of the ward in accordance with complaints, risk management, or human resources procedures.
- Bring to the attention of the Senior Sister/Charge any factors which may adversely affect patient care or service provision.
- Report all serious incidents to the appropriate Manager/Director within 24 hours; these include Never Events, serious falls, and grade 3 or 4 pressure ulcers.
Person Specification:
Experience:
- Essential: Experience at Band 5 within the specialty or related field. Ward/Departmental management experience at Band 5 or above. Ward/Department based teaching. Managing clinical risk and incidents at Ward/Department level.
- Desirable: Clinical audit activity, Risk assessment, Staff appraisals and PDR formation, Sickness absence/performance management, Complaints handling, Using Essence of Care standards.
Qualifications:
- Essential: RGN with current registration. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development. Evidence of management experience/training. Post registration qualification or experience in the specialty. NMC recognised teaching and assessing qualification.
- Desirable: Higher Degree than listed above.
