Worcestershire Royal Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Band 6 Infant Feeding Project Midwife to join our supportive Infant Feeding Team for 12 months (part-time 15 hours per week). This is an exciting opportunity for a midwife who is passionate about infant feeding, positive parent-infant relationships and improving the experience of families during the antenatal and postnatal period.


Working alongside our Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife and wider multidisciplinary team, you will play an important role in delivering our Infant Feeding Strategy and supporting the maternity service to sustain and develop our UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) standards.


You will have the opportunity to influence practice across the service through audit, education, staff support and the development of evidence-based resources. As a visible and approachable role model, you will inspire colleagues, promote best practice and have the confidence to provide constructive challenge where care can be improved.

Main duties of the job


As the Baby Friendly Initiative Audit Midwife, you will be a valued member of the Specialist Infant Feeding Team, helping to ensure women, babies and families across Worcestershire Royal Hospital receive compassionate, consistent and evidence-based infant feeding support.



  • Support the delivery of the Infant Feeding Strategy and UNICEF BFI standards.

  • Undertake BFI audits, review findings and work with teams to celebrate good practice and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Promote, protect and normalise breastfeeding in line with Trust policy, national guidance and the International Code.

  • Be a friendly, approachable role model, offering education, guidance and encouragement to midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team.

  • Support colleagues through teaching, coaching and constructive feedback to build confidence and improve practice.

  • Develop accessible, evidence-based infant feeding and relationship-building resources.

  • Promote accurate infant feeding documentation and support staff with BadgerNet recording.

  • Work collaboratively with families, colleagues and partner agencies to promote positive feeding experiences and nurturing relationships.

  • Share progress and BFI outcomes, helping teams recognise their achievements and maintain momentum.

  • Work autonomously while remaining accountable for safe, high-quality care.

Job responsibilities


The post holder will be a midwife with a drive to support continuous improvement, focusing on Infant Feeding and relationship building. They will be assisting the Specialist midwife Infant Feeding Team. This will be through supporting the clinical implementation of the maternity services infant feeding strategy for sustaining the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) UK Hospital award.


The post holder will be required to have in depth knowledge of infant feeding and the baby friendly standards. Experience of Audit is essential to the role.


They will also be expected to support the on-going development of all staff, demonstrating commitment to best practice and challenging staff if best practice is not being demonstrated.


The postholder will work closely with the multi professional team to develop a high standard of feeding information and to support families during the antenatal and postnatal period.


Key Duties


To work with the Infant Feeding Team


As the Infant feeding Project midwife, you will be a key member of the team, supported by the infant feeding team.


To undertake audit using BFI audit tools to evaluate and develop infant feeding practices with maternity services and review effectiveness of training and care provision.


To promote, support, protect and normalise breastfeeding in line with trust Infant Feeding Policy.


To support the implementation of the Infant Feeding Strategy for achieving BFI full accreditation status.


To develop initiatives towards embedding UNICEF BFI standards, striving to raise the breastfeeding rates in line with Trust, NHS and wider public health agenda.


To work as an assertive, organised, autonomous practitioner with effective time management.


To ensure full compliance with the International Code of the Marketing of Breastmilk substitutes (WHO 1981)


To act as an effective role model and demonstrate effective evidence-based care in relation to Infant feeding and Relationship building.


Providing continuous feedback to staff and support unit wide communication to keep them updated on progress with BFI actions e.g. effective handover and staff Facebook pages.


Be familiar with multi-disciplinary guidelines and policies relating to infant feeding and supporting staff to evolve if there are any changes in practice.


Develop resources on infant feeding and relationship building.


Foster harmonious relationships, liaising with colleagues and other agencies


To observe the Rules and Code of Conduct as laid down by the NMC, ensure these are adhered to by members of the team.


Foster a culture of openness, kindness and approachability within their role


Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward.


Attend mandatory training and statutory training (delivered online and in the classroom).

Always ensure the safety of patients


To foster and develop a working environment within which midwives can work as independent practitioners, accountable for their practice and in accordance with the NMC Rules and Code of Practice.


Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the project delivers high quality, patient centred care and disseminate knowledge in relation to infant feeding.


Be familiar with digital systems.


To teach staff about the correct use of the Badger Net Maternity Healthcare Record keeping system in relation to recording infant feeding events


Contribute to the creating and updating of evidenced based guidelines to support clinical practice and the BFI Standards


Manage the BFI Audit programme, collate the information obtained and following validation, submit it to UNICEF


Conduct UNICEF BFI Audits of staff, mothers/parents, supplementation rates and the environment in all areas of the Maternity Service and ensure findings are discussed with the Infant Feeding Coordinator


Provide regular feedback to staff with regards to compliance with BFI Standards through Practical Skills Reviews


Ensure a high level of visibility in clinical areas


Uphold and promote the themes of BFI Gold accreditation (Leadership, Culture, Monitoring and Progression)

Knowledge and Skills


Essential



  • Able to demonstrate the abilities and skill required to promote and support breast feeding with knowledge of current feeding practice. Has completed a preceptorship period.

  • Aware of current national research and drivers in infant feeding. Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritise workload.


Desirable



  • Understanding of Safeguarding issues.

  • Understanding of the role and own professional boundaries.

  • Previous audit experience.


Qualifications


Essential



  • Registered Midwife Degree in Midwifery or equivalent level of study Recent experience as a clinical midwife/nurse

  • Appropriate teaching and assessing course Practice Supervisor (Formerly sign off mentor)


Desirable



  • Degree or evidence of level 3 study or diploma ( or relevant experience) BFI accreditation knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative.
