Job summary

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust are looking for a highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic nurse to work within the Specialist Palliative Care team, 7-day service including bank holidays. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and delivering an innovative service model that aims to provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. You will need to have good clinical knowledge around end-of-life care, complex symptom control and advanced communication skills. We also encourage our Specialist Palliative Care team to take part in education both within the team and across the trust and will be expected to take on project work to improve service delivery.

Main duties of the job

As a band 6 clinical nurse specialist you will deliver expert clinical practice to patients with complex specialist palliative and end of life care needs. Your role will encompass elements of clinical practice, education, and service development whilst maintaining a strong focus on patient centered holistic care.

The successful candidate will work as part of the Hospital based Specialist Palliative Care Team. You will have experience in delivering end of life care and have the competence and confidence to assist in the management of patients with specialist palliative care needs. This will involve giving advice on symptom management, advance care planning , and delivering education to wider teams. You will work closely with members of the multidisciplinary team and will have excellent communication skills.

Informal visits are highly recommended.

Person Specification

Essential

  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of professional updating within the last 12 months (CPD)
  • Experience within palliative care - able to demonstrate capability in complex patient assessment, holistic needs evaluation and managing symptom control
  • Service development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and record keeping
  • Positive and enthusiastic role model
  • Courteous and polite
  • Flexible approach to weekend working and some lone workingComplex reasoning
  • Ability to communicate with senior staff within the profession, and other professions, patients/carers
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and compassion with patients, relatives or carers
  • Experience providing formal or informal teaching/mentorship to junior staff or students

Desirable

  • Accredited palliative care course (e.g Princess Alice course) or degree
  • Understanding of clinical audit and research implementation
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Use of databases
  • Knowledge of current NHS policy and their implication for services
  • Standard keyboard skills and knowledge of a number of IT packages such as excel, Word, PAS, e-rostering etc
