Job summary

Following a positive recommendation from the UK National Screening Committee and the successful delivery of a pilot in the North Rhondda area, the Welsh Government has approved the implementation of Lung Screening Wales as a new national screening programme. This represents a significant development for healthcare in Wales and offers an exciting opportunity for compassionate, motivated and innovative individuals to play a key role in delivering this important service.

Main duties of the job

There are multiple steps in the lung cancer screening pathway, including cohort identification and invitation, risk assessment, CT scanning, CT scan reporting, integrated smoking cessation and actioning results. The Senior Screening Nurse will support the planning and delivery of the risk assessment element of the pathway. The risk assessment's will be completed using standardised risk prediction models, with a set of fixed questions used to generate a risk score for each participant.

The outcomes of the participants identified as being at high risk will be clinically reviewed and, where eligible, referred for a screening low-dose CT scan by the Risk Assessment Team.

The risk assessment process also incorporates smoking cessation support, informed consent and clinical support for Nurses undertaking face-to-face risk assessments within Health Boards across Wales.

Job responsibilities

The Senior Screening Nurse will play a key role in the implementation and delivery of Lung Screening Wales, supporting the Programme Lead Nurse in establishing and maintaining a high-quality, participant-centred service.

Initially, the focus of the role will be on supporting the planning and operational delivery of the programme, including the recruitment, induction, training and supervision of a new team. The post holder will contribute to the development of clinical pathways, standard operating procedures and quality assurance processes to support the safe and effective implementation of the service.

Once operational, the Senior Screening Nurse will provide day-to-day leadership and management of the Risk Assessment Team, supporting Healthcare Support Workers undertaking telephone-based participant assessments to determine eligibility for lung cancer screening. The post holder will ensure assessments are completed in line with programme standards and will provide clinical guidance, advice and supervision.

The Senior Screening Nurse will undertake and oversee the clinical review of participant risk assessments and determine eligibility for screening. Acting as a Non-Medical Referrer, the post holder will be responsible for referring eligible participants for Low Dose CT (LDCT) screening in accordance with agreed protocols and pathways.

The post holder will support the Programme Lead Nurse in monitoring performance against programme standards. They will identify opportunities for service improvement, implement changes to practice where required, and contribute to the production of reports and performance information.

The role will involve delivering education and training programmes for staff, assessing competence, supporting professional development and promoting a positive learning culture. The Senior Screening Nurse will act as a role model for clinical practice, leadership and professional standards.

The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the Lung Screening Wales pathway, including Clinical Nurse Specialists across Health Boards in Wales, to support pathway delivery, facilitate effective communication and promote the sharing of best practice.

As a national programme role, occasional travel to hospitals, mobile CT units and healthcare sites across Wales will be required. The post holder will also be expected to provide support across Screening Services as required.

This is a hybrid role, working in a flexible manner, however it is essential that the post holder is able to travel to sites across Wales as required.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

• Registered Nurse with current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council
• Educated to degree level with a relevant qualification
• Post graduate master's qualification or equivalent level of skills and knowledge.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development.
• Knowledge and understanding of duty of candour, duty of quality, and clinical governance
• Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and IPC principles

Desirable

• Knowledge of the lung cancer screening pathway.
• Teaching and assessing qualification
• Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) qualification

Experience

Essential

• Experience in leading change, service improvement, and supervising staff
• Experience in delivering sensitive or complex clinical information
• Experience in leading in audit
• Experience of leading and managing a team
• Experience of reviewing incidents and concerns investigations, with the ability to lead investigations and identify learning

Desirable

• Experience working in Respiratory, oncology, community, or screening programme experience
