Staff Nurse Blackpool

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a Registered Nurse to join the team on Ward 14 - Surgical High Care Unit at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. We are a 20 bedded surgical ward that provides care for several specialities including general surgical, ENT, urology and gynaecology. We care for post operative patients admitted following elective surgery as well as patients admitted through the emergency pathway via our Surgical Assessment Unit. We are looking for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking nurse with a dynamic approach to join our motivated and supportive team. You must be punctual, flexible and committed to the role with a determination to ensure patients on the ward receive the highest standards of care. Our patients have varying degrees of dependency which will mean organising and prioritising care accordingly. You must be able to recognise and manage deteriorating patients.

Main duties of the job

• You will be supported to care for a group of patients, providing clinical care, wound management, nutritional support, stoma care and post operative care of the unwell patient.
• We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse who can work dynamically and at a fast pace to ensure safe and effective care delivery.
• You will work alongside members of the multidisciplinary team, medical staff acting as a role model and advocate for your patients.
• You must be professional at all times and have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team as well as your colleagues on the ward.

Job responsibilities

• As a Band 5 you will provide direct clinical care to surgical patients.
• Working alongside the nursing team, MDT and medical staff you will provide evidence based care.
• Complete observations, escalating any concerns appropriately to the nurse in charge and medical teams.
• Providing wound care, preparing patients for theatre, admitting and discharging patients safely.
• Be able to prioritise your workload whilst acting as an advocate for your patient, assessing and implementing their individual plan of care with accurate and concise documentation.
• Be a clear communicator within your team and the wider service and act in a sensitive and professional manner at all times, promoting the Values of the Trust.
• You will be trained to perform venepuncture and cannulation and IV drug administration, wound care and stoma care.

• Report accidents, incidents, losses as they occur to the nurse in charge.
• Attend yearly updates on all statutory training, including basic life support and manual handling and moving.
• The post holder must comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control.

Minimise the Risks Arising from Health Emergencies

• Report untoward incidents and occurrences regarding changes in patients condition to the nurse in charge/named nurse as they arise.
• Assist in emergency care once training undertaken.

• Liaise with nursing, medical, and other disciplines within our defined clinical area and other departments and hospitals.
• Be supportive to the patient and their family/carers at all times.

Receive and Transmit Information

• Ensure teamwork reports are completed and details entered onto the computer.
• Admit and discharge patients via the computer.
• Arrange waiting list admissions and participate in transfer and discharge arrangements for patients.

Store and Retrieve Records

• Maintain accurate registers and bed states.
• Ensure patients notes are filed and up to date.
• Ensure pathology results/X-Rays/reports are available and filed as necessary.

Enable Patients to Maintain their Interests, Identity and Emotional Well-being whilst Receiving a Care Service

• Anticipate and act on the physical and psychological needs of the patient and meet the same.
• Provide a relaxed and professional environment conducive to promoting the well-being of the patient.

Contribute to the Effective Communication where there are Communication Differences

• Provide effective working relationships with patients/relatives/carers/ nursing team/medical and multi-disciplinary teams.
• Report any complaints to the nurse in charge immediately.

Develop in the Work Role

• Attend in-service training, study days, seminars, courses as rostered.
• Attend a yearly IPR/Appraisal to set objectives and Personal Development Plan for the following twelve months with clinical leader.
• Attend / undertake leadership and management courses.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: Registered Nurse, Willingness to undertake teaching qualification.
• Desirable: Post registration Qualifications, Supervisor and Assessor Qualification.

Experience & Knowledge

• Essential: Post registration experience within an Acute NHS Trust, Evidence of continuous professional development, Experience of team management.
• Desirable: Evidence of supporting others in practice, Evidence of CDP relevant to role, Evidence of caring for the surgical patient.

Skills & Abilities

• Essential: Ability to set & establish priorities, Excellent time management, Excellent communication skills, Basic IT skills (Nexus, Safe Care, Cyberlab), Team player, Problem-solver/Lateral thinker, Delegation skills, Excellent attendance record.
• Desirable: Venepuncture & Cannulation, Catheterisation, Intermediate Life Support.
