Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor role for medical staff who wish to maintain and enhance their emergency medicine skills and experience. You will be part of a vibrant and dedicated Emergency Department (ED) team, working on the shop floor.

You will be given the opportunity to develop an interest in trauma management and acute resuscitation.

There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to explore a specialist interest relating to Emergency Medicine in their SPA time. Further information is available.

UK Emergency Department experience desirable.

Main duties of the job

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Emergency Department.

To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) utilising a minimum of 1 PAs a week for self-direct study.

The new appointees will be expected to join the middle grade body in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging with the juniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursing staff to ensure adequate patient flow. They will not be left as the most senior doctor in the ED.

For management purposes and use of resources the post holders will be accountable to the clinical lead and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

The appointee will be expected to provide cover when colleagues are on annual and study/professional leave.

Research activities which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful application to the local research and development.

Job responsibilities

Administrative duties the post holder will have continuing responsibility at all times for the care of patients in their charge and for contributing in the smooth running of the service. It is expected that the appointees will actively and regularly participate in Clinical Audit. Evaluation of the departments performance against agreed measures will take place.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

The appointee will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trusts clinical governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, clinical guidelines/pathways, and professional development, appraisal and risk management.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent
• Must have x2 of:
• ATLS/ETC, ALS, APLS/ EPALs
• Plus, working towards completion of all x3 areas of life support courses.

Desirable

• MRCEM
• Additional courses relevant to EM eg level 1 US, HMIMMS, NLS

Statutory Registration

Essential

• Full Registration with the GMC
• Leave to work in UK Evidence of compliance with standards of Good Medical Practice

Experience

Essential

• Completed significant postgraduate training.
• Need to have relevant experience of Emergency Medicine experience and competencies either as a doctor in training (or similar experience) in the NHS or overseas.
• Evidence of annual appraisal

Desirable

• Experience working in a UK Emergency Department

Special Skills & Knowledge

Essential

• Involvement in audit or quality improvement projects relevant to Emergency Medicine

Desirable

• Evidence of research and publication in peer reviewed journals

Special Requirements

Essential

• Able to work flexibly with colleagues to provide services.
• Able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, motivating and influencing others.
• Able to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, management and other agencies.
• Experience of teaching students and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

• Management or teaching qualifications relevant to Emergency Medicine.
