Candidates will be given speciality interview questions to answer on the day. Provides specialist technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples. Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department. Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Biomedical Scientist. To assist in training and supervising staff and deputising for the Advanced Biomedical Scientist when necessary.

Main duties of the job:

  • Microbiology at SWLP is looking for Specialist Biomedical Scientist (with a minimum of two years Band 5 experience) to join our dynamic, friendly team.
  • You will be deployed in Microbiology at the St George's site.
  • The department offers the latest equipment in the Microbiology field with three Kiestra lines, MALDI-ToF technology, Uri-system, Liaison XLs, EntericBio, BD FX, MGIT, Phoenix and Microscan.
  • There is an automated Serology track system and a specialised Molecular service including high throughput analysers.
  • The department also offers an extensive screening program for latent TB for the London region.
  • The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a minimum of two years experience working at Band 5 level, with good bacteriology knowledge and experience in addition to excellent problem solving skills.
  • You will be expected to participate in a 24/7 shift system which includes weekend, night, late and bank holiday working as part of hours.

SWLP is a pathology partnership between Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which provides a single, integrated pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London and beyond.

Qualifications and Training:

  • Essential: An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  • HCPC Registration
  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Essential: Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • Excellent working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues
  • Experience of quality management systems
