Staff Nurse - Hospice (Bank) Southampton

We are seeking dedicated Staff Nurses to join our Inpatient Unit, delivering exceptional care and support to patients living with life-limiting illnesses, and their families. This is an opportunity to work within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, providing holistic palliative and end-of-life care in a supportive, caring and professional environment. You'll play a vital role in ensuring patients receive the highest standard of individualised care.

Shift rotation including weekends, early shifts, late shifts, nights and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

As a Staff Nurse, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating patient-centred care. You will work closely with colleagues across nursing, medical and allied health teams to provide outstanding symptom management, pain control and emotional support for patients and those important to them. While primarily based within the Inpatient Unit, you may occasionally support other hospice services, including community settings, helping you broaden your experience and understanding of hospice care.

About You

You will be a Registered Nurse with current NMC registration, who is able to demonstrate a commitment to their own CPD. You will have excellent clinical skills and experience and be able to work under supervision and on your own initiative to provide the highest standards of care and support to your patients and their families. You will have good communication skills, with sound experience of symptom management gained with a Hospice/Hospital or Nursing Home environment. You will be willing to learn new skills and express a desire to develop your own practices.

Job responsibilities Overview of Role

To ensure the highest standards of individualised care for patients with life threatening diseases including providing support to their families and carers in a safe, friendly and efficient environment. To communicate with patients, families and carers in a sensitive and empathetic way maintaining effective communication with multi-disciplinary team members. To work as part of a multi-professional team with professional shared learning under the supervision and guidance of nurses and medical teams. Although based on our Inpatient Unit, post holders may occasionally be required to work in other teams to ensure adequate staffing levels and to gain experience of the wider hospice delivery of care.

Key Tasks

• To provide the highest standards of care to patients.
• To lead on and coordinate assessment, planning and evaluation of individualised patient centred care.
• Ensure that you always act in the patients best interests, taking personal responsibility for actions and decisions taken.
• Provide a holistic approach to all care provisions provided that is both sensitive and responsive to the patients ever changing needs.
• To provide out of hours specialist advice by telephone to patients, carers and allied professionals as required, alerting them to any significant matters.
• Give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, reporting immediately any changes in the patients condition to the senior nurse/medical personnel as duty as required.

Person Specification

Abilities Essential

• Able to work shift patterns on a rota basis including nights, weekend, bank holidays.
• Able to make effective use of available resources to benefit the patients and Mountbatten.
• Ability to deal with complex and difficult emotional situations.

Other Essential

• Physically capable of carrying out manual handling duties as required by this role.
• Be prepared to assist with Hospice fundraising.
• Support and adopt Mountbatten's Values.

Experience Essential

• Experience of dealing with vulnerable adults in a care setting.
• Experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and the ability to form good working relationships at all levels.
• Awareness of palliative care issues.
• Experience of working in a Hospital/Hospice care setting.

Skills Essential

• Understand specific needs of patients requiring palliative or end of life care.
• Demonstrate commitment to the patients right to be involved in decision making relating to their health care and ensuring decisions are understood by care teams.
• Ability to be an effective advocate for the patient with multi-disciplinary teams across all healthcare settings.
• Able to effectively manage own time and case load.

Qualifications Essential

• 1st Level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
• Revalidation of NMC Registration.
• Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development.
• Clinically up to date in general nursing care.
