Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced whole time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist post with a specialist interest in Ocular Oncology to be employed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post is primarily based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. This is a fixed term post for 12 months from the commencement date, with the potential to extend.

The Sheffield Ocular Oncology Service is a nationally designated Centre of Excellence, providing quaternary care for adults with eye cancers since 1987. We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant in Ocular Oncology to join a high‑performing multidisciplinary team delivering specialist, compassionate, and innovative care.
Main duties of the job:
- The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for delivering a comprehensive, effective and modern ophthalmology service with a substantial contribution to the Sheffield Ocular Oncology Service.
- Assess and manage patients with suspected and confirmed ocular malignancy.
- Participate in referral screening and triage processes.
- Deliver independent new patient and follow‑up clinics.
- Participate in virtual clinics and remote monitoring pathways.
- Undertake ocular oncology procedures and treatments.
- Contribute to reducing follow‑up backlogs and improving patient pathways.
- Participate in the weekly Ocular Oncology MDT.
- Work closely with colleagues across Ophthalmology, Oncology, Pathology and Radiology.
- Participate in training, education and supervision of fellows and junior doctors.
- Contribute to research, audit, quality improvement and service innovation.
The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.
Qualifications:
- Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practice or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
- FRCOphth or equivalent international ophthalmology qualification.
- Evidence of appropriate clinical and surgical experience suitable for the post.
- Ability to work as an independent practitioner.
- Ocular Oncology fellowship‑level experience in a recognised centre.
Essential personal attributes include good time management skills, ensuring value for money, and good oral and written communication skills.
