Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities:

• Delivering exceptional healthcare to patients, diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities

In accordance with the practice timetable, the post-holder will undertake a variety of duties, including:

• Face to face consultations, telephone consultations and answering queries
• Visiting patients at home
• Checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries relating to medicines management
• Dealing with paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion
• Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care professionals
• Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
• Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
• Developing care plans for health in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols
• Providing counselling and health education
• Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards
• Collecting data for audit purposes
• Prescribing in accordance with the local prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate

In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

• Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines

• Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting
• Using appropriate templates and protocols to ensure the correct summarising, recording and read coding of patient records

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

• MRCGP qualification or equivalent
• GMC registration and license to practice in the UK
• Representation with a recognised medical defence organisation
• Registered on a medical performers list
• Valid UK driving licence

Desirable:

• Postgraduate training and relevant experience in a clinical specialty
• GP Trainer

Experience

Essential:

• Strong clinical skills and a commitment to evidence-based practice
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to work autonomously and efficiently
• Good time management skills with a proven ability to handle a primary care case load
• IT proficiency and familiarity with primary care clinical systems (the Practice uses EMIS web)
• Experience in using Microsoft office programmes

Desirable:

• Experience and/or an interest in a specific disease area
• Experience and/or an interest in lifestyle medicine
• Experience of working with and supporting students

Other Skills

Essential:

• A commitment to primary prevention, and health improvement, and understanding the need for patient empowerment
• Experience and a commitment of working to standards / guidelines applicable to Primary Care e.g. NICE, prescribing, QoF
• Understanding and adherence of the need for confidentiality and data protection
• Acting as a patient advocate and able to assist patients in addressing health inequalities
• The ability to work collaboratively and effectively across networks providing the best localised care for patients and ensuring suitable use of all available resources
• A good knowledge of other primary care roles and how these can work in the multi-disciplinary team

Desirable:

• A good understanding of PMS contracting requirements and additional services
