Trainee Advanced Paediatric Clinical Practitioner Plymouth

The Advanced Practitioner role in Paediatric Emergency Department supports the assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of children and young people across acute paediatric pathways. The post holder will practise autonomously within their scope of competence, working collaboratively with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals to support safe, effective, and timely care.

Trainee applicants must be able to demonstrate extensive clinical experience in paediatrics. Any trainee appointment would be made at Band 7, with appropriate training, educational supervision and clinical support in place. This post is suited to clinicians committed to maintaining high standards of paediatric care and contributing to the development of paediatrics and advanced practice within the UHP.

Main duties of the job:

• Work in accordance with the Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE, 2017) and University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) Trust Policy for Advanced Practice and ED Governance Framework.
• Utilise advanced clinical skills to ensure that patients within Paediatric ED receive holistic, timely and high-quality care.
• Exercise clinical expertise, high levels of judgement, discretion, and decision-making in care, in accordance with their scope of practice.
• Draw on expertise utilising the four pillars of advanced practice to lead and influence improvements to standards of care.
• Develop a culture of organisational learning to inspire future and existing staff.
• Influence and support the improvement of care through clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research in collaboration with clinical and academic colleagues.
• Demonstrate compassionate leadership in daily working.
• Facilitate multidisciplinary education for all members of the Paediatric team.

Job responsibilities:

• Develop high level skills in assessing, differentially diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating individual treatment interventions for patients by virtue of growing expert clinical judgement and partnership with members of the MDT.
• Develop expertise and decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses.
• To successfully complete an NHS England-accredited masters degree in advanced practice.
• To complete relevant work-based assessments and clinical competencies relevant to role mapped to a generic AP and speciality-specific curriculum.

Person Specification:

Qualifications

• Essential: Statutory Professional Registration, Proven evidence of ability to work at academic level 7, Masters Degree in Advanced Practice or equivalent.
• Desirable: Management package, Instructor on life support courses, Education/Mentorship/Supervision Course, Professional Nurse Advocate or equivalent.

Knowledge and Experience

• Essential: Demonstrable experience within the paediatric Emergency Department/UTC and/or acute paediatrics, Proven management ability and leadership experience, Evidence of comprehensive clinical and practical skills, Demonstrable experience of education of others, Evidence of practice within the 4 pillars of advanced practice.
• Desirable: Change management skills, Multi-professional supervision, Appraisal skills, Implementing/influencing policy and clinical guidance, Recent demonstrable experience in clinical audit and quality improvement.

Aptitude and Abilities

• Essential: Proven ability to recognise and analyse complex situations and take appropriate action, Proven evidence of relevant, recent study and continuing professional development, Proven ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form, Flexible and responsive to changing environments, Demonstrates understanding and incorporates customer care, Proven ability to work with complex and diverse health informatics systems, Proven ability to manage own case load working to priorities and deadlines.
