Job summary

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

• Under the direction of the Nurse-in-Charge you will co-ordinate and deliver effective quality nursing care for level 1-3 patients within cardiac critical care. This will include assessing the needs, planning, implementing & evaluating the care for this group of patients.
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Following a period of Preceptorship take responsibility for the supervision of Health Care Assistants and other learner

Job responsibilities

• Clinical
• Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and coordinating the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care from admission to discharge
• Develop key skills in patient management which include: - the setting up and calibration and use of critical care equipment, including ventilators, dialysis machine, intra-aortic balloon pumps, pacing devices and advanced haemodynamic monitoring. Repatriation of level 1-3 patients within the trust and outside. Near patient testing e.g., blood analysis, TEG (thrombelastograph analysing) and urine
• Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multi-disciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care as they occur
• Engaging and interacting with carers and family, encouraging them to be actively involved in patients care planning as outlined in ward / unit philosophy
• Promoting and delivering health education within the clinical area and advise patients family and/or significant others in health promotion issues
• Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care
• Assisting other clinical areas within the Trust if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand
• Supervising and directing Health Care Assistants with their daily workload
• Administer prescribed medications/fluids safely and effectively according to trust policy
• Communicate with other areas/disciplines ensuring the sensitive and complex information regarding the patient is given appropriately with the confines of the data protection act and patient confidentiality
• Communicating with patients, relatives and outside agencies as appropriate within the confines of the Data Protection Act and Patient Confidentiality
• Implement and share good infection control practices and encourage all other disciplines to adhere to trust policies
• Undertaking manual handling assessments and ensuring identified actions are met

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

• Registered Nurse Training completed
• Basic computer skills
• Proven drug administration oral/intravenous demonstrable experience

Desirable

• Completed Preceptorship.
• Demonstrable experience of acute hospital setting e.g. ICU/HDU experience.

Qualifications

Essential

• NMC Registered Nurse
• Diploma qualification in a healthcare related subject / or equivalent demonstrable experience

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential

• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity, and effectiveness at all levels
• Ability to prioritise workload

Desirable

• Ability / demonstrable experience of - Directing and instructing others
• Ability to work autonomously
