Clinical Research Nurse in Plymouth

The ED Research Team coordinate a wide range of studies from Emergency care, Trauma, orthopaedics, mental health, elderly care, and medicine, both with adults and children, and work closely alongside all speciality teams to deliver best patient care.

The role involves day to day care of participants and clinical studies including screening, recruitment and follow up. Our team derives from a variety of backgrounds to create a multidisciplinary research team working together to deliver emergency care and front door research to a wide range of patients presenting to University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust from Plymouth and surrounding area.

Main duties of the job:

• The Clinical Research Nurse / Practitioner will work as part of the clinical research team within the Emergency Department to support the safe conduct of research in accordance with the Research Governance Framework and Good Clinical Practice guidelines and provide assurance that the rights, safety and well-being of trial participants are protected.
• The post-holder will work with the Emergency Department Research team to plan, implement, organise and manage concurrent research projects.
• S/he will develop networks with Multidisciplinary Teams across the Trust and other appropriate local and national agencies.
• S/he will coordinate and manage the relevant study portfolio and deliver recruitment accrual in line with performance and monitoring objectives.
• To develop skills of leadership and act as a role model to staff members.
• To be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the clinical requirements associated with research to ensure optimum delivery of clinical trials.
• You will ensure that all research procedures are conducted according to study protocols and will be accountable for the recruitment, data collection and care of research participants with a focus on providing a quality experience.
• Contribute towards the continuing development of professional nursing practice in the Emergency Department.

Job responsibilities:

• Have an understanding of the clinical research teamwork-plan and contribute to its achievement.
• Manage research performance and study timelines of relevant studies.
• Collaborate with other Trusts and organisations within the region to improve research delivery.
• Keep up to date with research management issues through liaison with other Research Specialists /Team leaders and link with national networks.
• Provide relevant supervision and mentorship to members of staff and students.
• Take responsibility for own health, safety and security and promote the health, safety and security of the wider team.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical and research policies, procedures and SOPs.
• Facilitate and maintain effective communication within the research team and between the multidisciplinary clinical team.
• Assist in the delivery of education and training regarding research for the wider Multidisciplinary Team and act as an ambassador for research.
• Promote a blame free culture in reporting incidents and where appropriate support local investigation of incidents.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications
• Essential: Registered Nurse or Healthcare Professional, (if not a registered practitioner then significant appropriate clinical practice essential)
• Desirable: Research Training (e.g. GCP, degree module, informed consent)
• Knowledge and Experience
• Essential: Pertinent clinical skills, Computer literacy including ability to work with databases, Proven ability to organise and prioritise own workload and work to tight deadlines, Proven ability to make independent decisions, Understand the significance of research and use of validated results to improve practice, Demonstrable experience with dealing with confidential patient information, Proven ability to communicate complex information to patients/carers/members of MDT
• Desirable: Knowledge of the Research Governance Framework and Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, Knowledge of clinical trials & research methodologies.
