Main duties of the job

You will work closely with the Matron, Clinical Leads and multidisciplinary teams to provide leadership across Transplant and Urology services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care and an excellent patient experience. The role supports operational management, workforce development, governance, quality improvement and patient safety, while helping to deliver the Directorate's strategic objectives. The Deputy Matron will provide senior leadership during periods of operational pressure, support patient flow, admission and discharge processes, and work collaboratively with clinical and site teams to identify and manage risks, maintain patient safety and ensure effective use of capacity.

Job responsibilities

As Deputy Matron for Transplant and Urology, you will work closely with the Matron, Clinical Leads and multidisciplinary teams to provide visible leadership across inpatient, outpatient and specialist services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care and an excellent patient experience. The role is essential in supporting the operational management of the service, driving quality improvement, workforce development, governance and patient safety initiatives, while delivering the strategic objectives of the Directorate. The post holder will provide senior on-site leadership, particularly during periods of operational pressure, representing the service at operational meetings, working collaboratively with medical and nursing teams, and developing effective relationships with key stakeholders across the Trust.

The Deputy Matron will play a pivotal role in supporting patient flow across the specialty, ensuring timely admission, discharge and escalation processes are in place for transplant and urology patients. Working closely with site, operations and clinical teams, the post holder will help identify and address risks to patient care at the earliest opportunity, facilitating access to specialist input, diagnostics and treatment to prevent delays and reduce the risk of patient deterioration. They will also support the safe management of capacity pressures, ensuring patients receive timely reviews and coordinated care.
