Metastatic Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist NEWPORT

Band 7: £49,387 - 56,515 pro rata per annum (Actual salary £29,632 - £33,909 per annum)

Hours: 22.5 Hours per week

The post holder will be the identified lead in the development of nursing practice in their specialist area, working at an advanced level across the healthcare teams, also as a core member of the metastatic breast cancer Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT). They will be the identified key worker for patients with metastatic breast cancer and their families on the Isle of Wight, coordinating patient care throughout their cancer pathway, including the onward referral of key worker status.

The post holder will act as a resource to all healthcare professionals caring for patients with metastatic breast cancer and work in close collaboration with other cancer specialist nurses in mainland cancer centres, especially Queen Alexandra Hospital (PHT) and University Hospital Southampton (UHS). They will work as part of the wider cancer team and across departmental, divisional and Trust boundaries to support the delivery of a patient-centred seamless service.

Main duties of the job:

• Deliver cancer waiting targets and manage the patients' cancer pathway.
• Support with critical clinical nursing interventions.
• Liaise with PHT specialist MDT to facilitate safe effective care within IOW with external specialty consultants.
• Prevent admissions or expedite admission for patients with oncological emergencies.
• Arrange blood transfusions or vital medications and treatment plans.
• Support during breaking bad news.
• Ensure MDT outcomes are actioned to avoid delay in patient cancer pathways.
• Support visiting oncologists, provide vital patient information and signposting, and provide psychological support to cancer patients.

Job responsibilities:

• Provide a comprehensive quality service that demonstrates highly specialised clinical knowledge and expertise for the management of patients with metastatic breast cancer and their carers/family.
• Make contact with patients from the time of initial referral/diagnosis to provide practical, psychological and emotional support.
• Work as part of the wider cancer service providing expert support to patients and their families.
• Provide expert communication with patients in ways which empower them to make informed choices about their health and healthcare.
• Work in collaboration with the lead clinician and the Multidisciplinary Team on the Isle of Wight and mainland, to provide a high-quality coordinated service between all disciplines.
• Act as an expert resource in providing evidence-based advice and information to promote the health and well-being of patients with metastatic breast cancer service needs.
• Provide professional innovation within the specialty and contribute to the development of metastatic breast cancer services throughout the Trust as a core member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team.
• Provide clinical nursing leadership and act as a specialist resource for nurses, doctors and others in the acute trust and community services within the specialty.
• Lead the development and implementation of clinical audits and research projects in own specialist area, ensuring that the findings are disseminated and good practice is shared across the trust and beyond.

Qualifications and Experience:

• This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
• Registered nurse: entry on either part 1 or 12 of the NMC register, with 5 years post-basic clinical experience.
• Cancer care/palliative care/Haematology specialist training/knowledge.
• Evidence of professional development relevant to the specialty.
• To hold an ENB 998 or teaching qualification.
• To have completed specialist study at level 7.
• To hold or be working at master level qualifications.
• Evidence of continuing professional development and training.
• A minimum of 3 years professional practice with experience in clinical Haematology or oncology, with a sound knowledge of the specialty.
