An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic Advanced Clinical Pharmacist to join our team here at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital. We are looking for a dynamic individual to help establish and lead the clinical pharmacy service into Trauma and Emergency Surgery. The trust has provided significant investment into pharmacy and views us as integral for the future. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interested in trauma/emergency surgery to help grow the pharmacy service and become a key part of both the clinical and pharmacy teams, to help provide the best possible care for our patients.

The role will be based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary but may involve some cross-site travel to work at our other large teaching hospital site, the Freeman Hospital. This is an exciting time to become part of the pharmacy team at Newcastle, as we look to grow and develop our clinical service and introduce new roles. This role is a great opportunity to work alongside our established Trauma and Orthopedics lead pharmacist and others in the team, to revolutionise the pharmacy input to surgical patients admitted via emergency routes.

Main duties of the job:

  • The successful candidate will work to establish themselves in both the surgical team and the existing clinical pharmacy team.
  • You will need to have excellent communication and decision-making skills and be an experienced independent prescriber.
  • Previous experience in this area would be useful but is not essential.
  • We are looking for a leader to help shape the clinical pharmacy service ensuring we maximise our benefit for the highest risk, emergency surgical patients.
  • The aim in the near future, is to have a 7-day service into our key admission areas, and this role is crucial to that.
  • Within the role, there will be opportunity to pursue areas of interest to you, and you will be crucial in driving the direction of travel.
  • The role will offer the opportunity to provide your expertise to patients when they need it most, using your prescribing skills to work seamlessly with pharmacy colleagues and other members of the MDT.
  • There will be opportunities for personal and professional development within the role.
  • Links with the school of pharmacy and Newcastle University will present opportunities to be involved in research and education.
  • There is opportunity to develop your supervision and management skills.
  • There will be some operational commitments, including weekend/late night working and line management.

Job responsibilities:

  • To organise and develop clinical pharmacy services within agreed clinical area.
  • To undertake an agreed prescribing role within agreed clinical area.
  • To participate in the provision of clinical and patient services functions.
  • To promote the safe, rational and cost effective use of medicines by working closely with nursing and medical staff and health care managers.
  • To perform the professional role of a registered pharmacist, including advice, supervision and co-operation with colleagues, particularly in relation to support/cover for absent colleagues.

Person Specification:

Qualifications & Education:

  • Essential: M Pharm (or equivalent) degree course and pre-registration experience, Registered Pharmacist (GPhC), Clinical Diploma, Independent Prescriber.
  • Desirable: Clinical Masters.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Essential: Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD), well-developed clinical pharmacy knowledge across all aspects of drug use, knowledge of clinical audit and its role in pharmacy and medicine, extensive post registration experience in hospital pharmacy, some at a senior level, demonstrate a developing clinical role, demonstrate they have been involved in the area of clinical audit.
  • Desirable: Specialist knowledge of the clinical area(s) or directorates involved, awareness of the role and responsibilities of the pre-registration pharmacist tutor, demonstrate they have undertaken a managerial role.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Essential: Demonstrate ability to communicate, oral and written, specialist clinical information, one to one communication, influencing and negotiating skills, basic computer skills.
  • Desirable: Lecturing skills, Microsoft office.
