Job summary
Our OPAL (Older Person Assessment and Liaison) service is expanding, and we want you to be part of our next phase of development. Due to continued investment within the service, we are recruiting Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners. This exciting, fully funded training position offers the opportunity to undertake a 2-year Master's degree programme, supporting your professional development in perioperative medicine, frailty, and the complex care of older surgical patients, with progression to Band 8a upon successful completion of the programme. You will attend university and have dedicated study time each week, while spending the remainder of your working hours OPAL team. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in the assessment, optimisation, and ongoing management of older adults throughout their surgical pathway. The service is committed to delivering comprehensive geriatric assessment and person-centred care, ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time, while improving surgical outcomes and supporting informed decision-making. This role offers experience across pre-operative assessment, perioperative optimisation, inpatient care, and discharge planning. As the service continues to evolve, flexibility and a commitment to collaborative working across specialties will be essential.
Main duties of the job
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
- To utilise advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and therapeutic skills to assess, optimise, and manage older patients with frailty, multimorbidity, and complex needs throughout the perioperative pathway.
- To undertake comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and develop personalised management plans in to support informed decision-making and optimise surgical outcomes.
- To plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with surgical, anaesthetic, therapy, nursing, and medical teams.
- To contribute to pre-operative assessment, perioperative optimisation, postoperative management, discharge planning, and follow-up care, supporting continuity across the patient pathway.
- To provide clear leadership and direction within the OPAL surgical liaison team and wider multidisciplinary team.
- To support the education and development of colleagues, students, and multidisciplinary team members in the principles of geriatric medicine, frailty management, and perioperative care.
- To critically engage in research, audit, and quality improvement activities.
- To contribute to the ongoing development and evaluation of the OPAL surgical liaison team, supporting innovation and the implementation of best practice standards in perioperative care.

What is a DBS Check?

The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.
