Job summary
We are looking for a professional and skilled Senior Radiographer to lead our amazing team as Deputy General Superintendent.
The post holder will maintain a significant clinical component within their role and will be expected to maintain and develop competence across General X-ray, CT and Interventional Radiography, providing senior clinical expertise and operational leadership across these areas.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will act as a point of escalation for operational and clinical issues within their delegated authority and will exercise delegated responsibility for the organisation and coordination of clinical services. They will also support staff and provide visible leadership to Radiographers, Radiology Assistants and Students.
They will deputise for the General Superintendent Radiographer when required and will be expected to make appropriate operational decisions at Band 7 level within agreed departmental policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities
1. Senior Clinical Practice
- Work as an experienced senior radiographer across General X-ray, Emergency Department X-ray, CT and Interventional Imaging.
- Maintain a high standard of professional and clinical practice across all areas in which the post holder works.
- Act as a source of expert clinical advice and support for radiographers, assistant practitioners, radiology assistants and students.
- Undertake complex examinations and procedures within the scope of professional practice and demonstrated competence.
- Adapt imaging techniques appropriately for complex patient presentations and challenging clinical circumstances.
- Ensure that examinations are performed safely, effectively and in accordance with departmental protocols and relevant legislation.
- Act as an Operator under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations in accordance with the Trust's Employer's Procedures.
- Ensure appropriate radiation protection principles and Local Rules are followed.
- Review image quality and provide guidance to staff where improvement is required.
- Recognise clinical findings requiring urgent escalation and ensure appropriate communication with the relevant Radiologist or clinical team.
- Maintain competence in intravenous cannulation and contrast administration where required.
- Maintain competence in the specialist equipment and techniques required within each clinical area.
2. General and Emergency X-ray Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice regarding complex radiographic techniques and examinations.
- Support maintenance of high standards of image quality.
- Provide advice to clinical referrers regarding appropriate imaging pathways within the scope of professional practice.
- Support the management of complex trauma, paediatric and other challenging examinations.
- Support effective provision of theatre and mobile radiography services.
3. Operational Leadership
- Provide Band 7 operational leadership within the assigned clinical area.
- Coordinate the work area and allocate staff according to workload, competency, clinical priority and service requirements.
- Plan and prioritise patient workload according to clinical urgency and available resources.
- Ensure the timely, efficient and courteous provision of imaging services.
- Respond to fluctuations in workload and staffing and make appropriate operational adjustments.
- Identify staffing pressures and redeploy staff where appropriate within the post holder's delegated authority.
- Support management of short-notice sickness and unexpected staffing gaps.
- Escalate significant staffing or service risks to the Superintendent or Operational Manager where they cannot be safely resolved locally.
- Ensure effective communication and handover between clinical areas and shifts.
- Liaise with Radiologists, clinical teams, nurses, administrative staff and other Imaging staff to support effective patient pathways.
- Coordinate service provision during equipment breakdown or other operational disruption.
- Re-prioritise workloads and, where necessary, support the rescheduling of patients to minimise disruption to the service.
- Troubleshoot operational and clinical problems which require senior radiographer intervention.
4. Deputy Responsibility
- Deputise for the General Superintendent Radiographer when required.
- Exercise delegated authority for the operational management of the service during periods of deputising.
- Provide a visible leadership and act as a point of escalation for staff.
- Make day-to-day operational decisions required to maintain safe and effective service delivery.
- Provide advice and guidance to staff regarding departmental policies, procedures and professional practice.
- Support the implementation of decisions made by the Superintendent and wider Imaging management team.
- Escalate significant operational, professional, workforce or patient safety concerns appropriately.
- Represent the General Superintendent at meetings where specifically delegated.
- Maintain effective communication with the Superintendent regarding significant issues, decisions and actions undertaken while deputising.
5. Staff Management and Leadership
- Provide professional leadership and supervision to radiographers and support staff.
- Act as a positive role model and promote high standards of professional behaviour and clinical practice.
- Provide day-to-day management and guidance to staff within the assigned clinical area.
- Allocate duties and provide clear direction to staff according to service requirements.
- Monitor professional standards and raise concerns regarding performance, conduct, attendance or capability with the appropriate manager.
- Address routine issues relating to professional practice and behaviour at an appropriate informal level.
- Provide constructive feedback, coaching and support to staff.
- Participate in staff appraisal and Personal Development Planning as delegated.
- Undertake appraisals for allocated members of staff where agreed with the Superintendent.
- Support staff wellbeing and identify concerns requiring escalation.
- Participate in recruitment and selection processes when required.
- Support induction and orientation of new staff.
- Promote collaborative multidisciplinary and cross-modality working.
6. Rota and Workforce Management
- Participate in the organisation and maintenance of departmental rotas.
- Assist with resolving staffing gaps arising from sickness, annual leave, training and other absences.
- Review skill mix and competency when making staff allocation decisions.
- Facilitate appropriate movement of staff between clinical areas where operationally necessary and safe to do so.
- Support appropriate allocation of staff for training and competency development.
- Support management of shift changes and swaps in accordance with departmental processes.
- Use the Trust electronic rostering system appropriately.
- Identify recurrent workforce pressures and elevate these to the Superintendent.
7. Quality Assurance and Equipment
- Support implementation and maintenance of the departmental Quality Assurance programme.
- Undertake and oversee appropriate equipment QA testing within the post holder's area of competence.
- Ensure QA results and equipment performance concerns are appropriately documented and escalated.
- Monitor and report equipment faults.
- Assess the likely impact of equipment failure on service delivery and take appropriate operational action.
- Liaise with engineers, Medical Physics and equipment providers when delegated.
- Support contingency planning during equipment failure.
- Promote safe and appropriate use of Imaging equipment.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment utilisation and workflow
8. Clinical Governance and Risk
- Promote compliance with clinical governance requirements across Imaging.
- Ensure clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents are appropriately reported.
- Participate in incident investigation and review when delegated.
- Support completion and monitoring of actions arising from incidents.
- Participate in departmental audit and quality improvement activity.
- Support implementation of recommendations arising from audit, incidents and service reviews.
- Identify potential risks to patients, staff or service delivery and elevate appropriately.
- Support compliance with Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, safeguarding and information governance requirements.
- Promote accurate documentation and data quality within Imaging information systems.
9. Education, Training and Competency
- Participate in the education and training of Radiographers, Radiology Assistants and Students.
- Provide clinical supervision to staff undertaking competency development.
- Assess competencies where appropriately trained and authorised to do so.
- Support development and maintenance of competency frameworks across General X-ray, CT and Interventional Imaging.
- Identify staff development needs and communicate these to the relevant Superintendent or modality lead.
- Support newly qualified Radiographers and staff rotating into unfamiliar clinical areas.
- Promote reflective practice, Continuing Professional Development and evidence-based practice.
- Maintain an appropriate personal CPD portfolio.
10. Service Development and Audit
- Contribute to the development and improvement of Imaging services.
- Identify opportunities to improve patient flow, efficiency, quality or safety.
- Participate in departmental audit and service evaluation.
- Support implementation of agreed changes to clinical or operational practice.
- Contribute to development and review of departmental protocols and procedures.
- Participate in projects delegated by the Superintendent or Imaging management team.
- Encourage staff involvement in quality improvement and service development.
