Locum Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine London

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Locum Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine on a 12-month contract. This is a replacement post to fill an existing vacancy in order to meet the demand of increasing inpatient and outpatient referrals, the growing demand for two-week wait services, and inpatient care, including the provision of a Respiratory Support Unit and CPAP.

Main duties of the job:

• The successful candidate will join a rapidly expanding Respiratory Department.
• We are seeking an outstanding clinician to complement the current respiratory service, particularly someone with a sub-specialty interest in airways disease.
• Support inpatient respiratory care on Lamb ward and other wards, including the provision of NIV, and inpatient respiratory consultations.
• Lead and develop a comprehensive Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) service, including dedicated outpatient clinics and specialist patient management.
• Chair and coordinate the ILD multidisciplinary team (MDT), bringing together respiratory physicians, radiologists, pathologists, rheumatologists, pharmacists and specialist nurses.
• Provide expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with ILD, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, connective tissue disease-associated ILD and other fibrotic lung diseases.
• Take clinical responsibility for prescribing and monitoring immunosuppressive and antifibrotic therapies, ensuring safe and effective medicines governance.
• Design and implement standardised clinical pathways for referral, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and long-term follow-up of ILD patients.
• Lead service improvement, education, research, audit and regional collaboration to enhance quality of care and ensure compliance with national ILD standards and guidelines.

Job responsibilities:

The post is focused on the delivery of high-quality patient care in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine. In addition, the post involves inpatient respiratory care, including non-invasive ventilation, delivered as part of a team with three other respiratory physicians. The post is offered on a full-time basis of 10 programmed activities. There will be 8.0 PAs of direct clinical care and 2.0 PAs allocated for supporting professional activities (SPAs). For consultants with GIM accreditation, the post includes participation in the GIM on-call rota. As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close cooperation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high-quality, safe healthcare to patients.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

• Essential: Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register by date of interview / CCT MRCP/FRCP/MBBS (or equivalent).
• Desirable: MD (Resp), PhD or other higher degree.

Relevant experience in speciality:

• Essential: Sub specialist training in airways disease- Asthma and COPD.
• Desirable: Experience in MDT participation in delivering biologic therapies for asthma. Publications or presentations in asthma or COPD. Experience in integrated care or community respiratory pathways.

Clinical skills:

• Essential: Ability to practice independently in respiratory medicine and general internal medicine and offer expert clinical opinion on a range of respiratory and general medical problems. Evidence of leadership skills and service development experience.

Leadership and professionalism:

• Essential: Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need.
• Desirable: Familiar with current structure of the health service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Management skills:

• Essential: Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates. Understanding of the importance of good clinical coding.
• Desirable: Management of team or programme or project; management qualification.

Teaching & training:

• Essential: Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.
• Desirable: Experience of educational supervision.

Clinical Governance:

• Essential: Evidence of contribution to effective audit and clinical risk management.

Research:

• Essential: Understanding of principles and application of clinical research. Publication of peer reviewed papers.
• Desirable: Relevant research experience.
